Owning the property is in investment. Yes, its goal is to turn a profit. Guess how much profit their place is making when its empty for 2 months? People do still have the freedom of choice. If people find rent is too expensive, they can find roommates and split the cost.

In Sweden we have ”Hyresgästföreningen” which is basically a union for people renting apartments. You can call them and get a lawyer (free of charge) if you get in conflict with the landlord, and will argue on your behalf as well as prevent exorbant increased in rent of overall exploitation.

You can also call them for general legal advice regarding housing, and will file a lawsuit on your behalf if they find the landlord is breaking the law.

Yea, there are awful companies out there, 100%. Those are the slumlords Spicy is referring. The property management companies I've had, as well as my solo-landlord before them, have been stellar. Shit gets done, things are fixed, maintained, notices sent to everyone in a timely fashion. Of course I cater my apartment searches to filter out known scum, and its very area-dependant. Just another reason Chicago [northside] is superior to many metro US areas.

Like the mall in your city; who the shit is going to do the maintenance on that fucker other than a corporation specifically designed to handle that shit. HVAC, elevators, escalators, whatever, whatever, whatever. That shit costs literal millions on millions. Even the largest companies aren't equipped with a roster or the monthly funds to handle all that goes into maintaining a large scale facility. The overhead is absurd. It's so much cheaper and realistic to be renting, and the property management company can maintain that overhead from the rent it's acquiring from it's tenants.

I suppose we haven't really talked about businesses at all, if you abolished private ownership of land, what becomes of the land owned by corporations? do they then just pay the government a fixed rate for the land? Would the government even have the funds to compensate for all the land it would be straight up taking from everyone? Or would they just say "Heh...Sucks to Suck!" and not pay people for their land? I'm on board with most of Spicy's social issues and also reject the notion that implementing them is impossible. The way things are is no reason not to imagine and work toward the way they should be.

For the record I'm almost 4 years into being a landlord and have hired outside help 4 times - once for partial roof replacement, once for sprinkler repair (should've done this myself), once for hot water heater replacement and once for central air conditioner recharging.

All the yard work, plumbing, electrical, flood repair, bathroom ventilation install, and a dozen other things I've self-performed.

Also the idea that the government renting out a house they own is better than a private landlord doing the same is entirely dependent on their performance at the task. Obviously the government could outperform the average landlord.

But would they?

My company has been trying to returned borrowed hardware to a branch of the govt...since January 2020. Yes, some of that was covid interruption, however I nudged the request in back in February and its still pending.

If you called your govt landlord about your hot water pipe being broken, you'll be taking cold showers for about a month. THEN, you'll get a call that someones on the way to fix it, and they'll be there in 4-6 weeks. When they show up, you find out that was just an "assessment visit" and they have to put in the request for parts...thats another 2 months.
