Rented House burned down. Anyone know of assistance programs?

So last Wednesday 6hrs before I hopped on a plane to fly back to DC for work while at the store getting last minute things got a call from roommate that the house was on fire. Sped home and ran a few red lights and saw at least 4 fire trucks, 2 EMT and a couple police cars there. Fire had been put out but it was blazing earlier (neighbor took a video).

Not sure what the cause was, but I had left the house literally 10mins earlier and there was nothing. No smoke, no nothing going on (Looks like is started on porch or in garage) but I left through the garage and double checked the porch since I had an Amazon pickup waiting there.

Firefighters have no idea how it went down. Roommate immediately blamed himself since he had gone out to smoke a cig, but he always used an ashtray and had stubbed the cig out. Even if it was lit I can't imagine it lighting a somewhat wet (had been sprinkling off and on that evening)and weathered porch in the span of 4mins into a fire that consumed an entire garage and kitchen.

The amazon package waiting to be picked up was a knock off pair of clippers I had ordered but gotten the wrong ones, came from a shit 3rd party brand on Amazon and looking into it more they had tons of reviews of their product's lithium batteries just getting way too hot, being super faulty and other crap. So not sure if that somehow ignited the Amazon box it was in and lit up the porch/side of garage. I know that side of the garage had paint cans on it the homeowner put there so i'm sure that didn't help.

Red Cross came, gave me $515 and my roommate and his wife....$515 also lol..not sure why they got basically half of what I got.

We're shacked up in an AirBNB right now for next month while we try to house hunt yet again in San Diego. Thankfully prices have dropped a bit since last spring.

Anyone know of any other assistance beyond Red Cross? Had not taken out renters insurance yet, had been living there about 2 months and had so much going on I had dropped the ball on that. Thankfully a good chunk of our stuff wasn't consumed by fire and while smokey can be saved.

Shit, this is horrible news, I hope you're able to get yourself resituated. I can't think of other relief funds. If you had renter's insurance make sure they are doing their part (assuming fire is covered). --- disregard just read the last sentence of the OP lol.

Yeah next place def gonna do renters insurance lol. Sucks that didn't take it out in time but also glad we all got out safe and most of our stuff too so it's not a huge loss. Spent all of today touring some houses around San Diego/Chula Vista area. God I fucking hate this haha, so many are just complete fucking ass.

Check with your county to see if they have any emergency housing assistance.

Local churches may also have some assistance (more on the clothing and food end) as well

Hmm.. based on my experiences most will not help you but always say something along the lines of sorry for your loss(es).

Your best bet is to live out of your car for awhile an save a bunch of cash an restart living somewhere else but thats just me.
As for the aid programs.. check the local welfare office (yeah I know sucks) but thats about as good as it might get.

Hate to say it but your living in the have or have not era, just keep your mental composure as best you can an go forward
from here. Before you know it.. this will all be behind you.

This counts as my 2nd post of 10.
