we hear about it sometimes at my part time job at the parks department. not in our town but somewhere else in nj a couple years ago a kid (pitcher) got hit in the chest with a line drive and went into cardiac arrest. it became part of the Rutgers safety course we teach shortly after

ive never had a heart attack (yet) but i wonder for a brief second if they wonder if they just got the wind knocked out of them

People are making a lot of assumptions. As someone that has personally had a heart attack at the age of 34, I can confidently say it could be a million different things.

The kid could have the same underlying genetic heart condition I have; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It's where the heart valve has grown too large/thick and the blood doesn't pump to the heart at the correct level. And as a result any rhyme change to your heart, your heart simply can't adjust to it.

For me it didn't even have to be a hit to the chest to disrupt the rhyme for my attack to happen. It was adrenaline. Being too amped up literally almost killed me one day because I was born with a genetic disease that is rarely found out about until it's already too late.

I have heard of this happening too. Incredibly rare. I remember doing some reading about it a long time ago. I will try and keep this short. There is a fraction of a second in your heartbeat where if you suffer any blunt force to the chest, even something seemingly insignificant, it can interrupt the normal synus rhythm of your heart and cause it to stop.

Well said. I kept seeing people throw out heart attack or blood clots because of disease but that is very unlikely given his age.

For fantasy championship the sportmanly thing to do would be to split.

I'm playing for 3rd to get my buy-in back and I have Diggs and the Bills kicker, I'm down by 9.

I'm not really worried about splitting the buy in but if it was for 1st/2nd I'd split the money and whoever is in the lead gets the title.

Yeah, that's how I'd do it if I was commish. If players were involved, split it.

As for Vegas bets, the only way I can see them doing is refund them, or if it's part of a parlay, remove that leg and re-adjust the odds accordingly.

I stand by my previous statement that blunt force to the heart stopped it. It's the most likely medical explanation in someone who literally would have had to have several falsified physical exams to miss something like that.

He's 24. No way HOCM would have been missed.

I may sound callous but to say the entire schedule needs to be suspended is ridiculous. Postpone the game, sure, or force a forfeit, but to say nobody should play at all is a bit stupid. They're going to have to play each other whether it's now or the playoffs.

Should the NFL really just say "fuck you" to the other teams who played up to this point?

I think the logical conclusion is that Hamlin's family tells the teams that Hamlin would want them to go get that home field advantage and they figure out how to play it.

The hell are you talking about? HCM is the most statistically common reason for cardiac arrest in athletes under the age of 35. It's common place. Literally hundreds of athletes have had undiagnosed HCM, and either survived the attack or didn't, this century. Shit just this year a college football TE died jogging from undiagnosed HCM. A G-league player died on the court from HCM 3 years ago.

It's actually more common to have it undiagnosed than it is to have it diagnosed simply because you rarely have any symptoms until you have the attack. It can also be difficult to find. I had multiple ECG/EEG tests growing up because of vertigo (the cause of my vertigo went undiagnosed) and I wasn't diagnosed with HCM until after both my father and I had heart attacks within a year of each other.

I may sound callous but to say the entire schedule needs to be suspended is ridiculous. Postpone the game, sure, or force a forfeit, but to say nobody should play at all is a bit stupid. They're going to have to play each other whether it's now or the playoffs.

Unless these teams are going to forfeit their next game and playoff games as well, they'll be playing football against somebody eventually. Is the league going to claim these two teams have PTSD, but only when they're playing against each other? It's very goofy.
