TBF this makes perfect sense for about 7 different reasons from him.

1. Foreign policy almost never makes an appreciable impact on elections, except when the issue is "should we get out of X foreign war?" - He is promising not to enter a foreign war even against Russia. This is going to sound good to people.
2. Oh, Trump reneging on a deal when someone comes to collect? shocking
3. Maybe in Putin's pocket?
4. Running lower on funds than he would like due to the millions he is spending on legal fees, so being provocative to make news.
5. Saying this will put 10 nerds with glasses onto TV to try and make the counterpoint that acktually we should enter a foreign war with Russia if one happens but not Ukraine this time because they didn't join our kool kids klub, which is basically 10 ads for Trump (punch them nerds.)
6. The prototypical TV european is a perfectly tailored, multilligual French man, while the prototypical TV Russian drinks vodka and kills people (usually as the villain of an 80s movie). Guess which one Trump's base prefers.
7. Beyond that, Putin polls way ahead of Biden and about neck-and-neck with Obama for Trump's base.

So it makes political sense, suits his personality, and it looks like a common sense position if you just scratch the surface and barely understand history (aka are American). Amplifying this message will only help Trump.



While it probably wouldn't end the world tomorrow, the stability of the current world order would be greatly negatively impacted if we did not hold up our side of Article 5 and honestly even having him in the race (for re-election, mind you) should be making the other NATO members think even harder about their defense spending and domestic capacity.
