I just watched a commercial for a bipolar medicine. The only people they highlighted were white women and a black guy. Is this a coincidence or on purpose?

I'm hearing that televised ads for prescription meds isn't a thing outside the US.

Yup, prescription meds are not allowed to be advertised in the EU. Non-prescription meds can be advertised.

I'm honestly surprised they're even advertised in the US. What's the point/target audience for that anyway? Your doctor should be the one prescribing medicine, and recommend other medicines to you based on your history. If a treatment isn't working or you get side effects you have a hard time dealing with, they should recommend a different one based on your medical history and feedback.

My understanding is that white folks was and is in some circles considered a racist slur, so yt folx or yt (old slang) was used as a way to get around social media and online filters.

You have to understand, new prescription drugs advertised on tv in America are obscenely expensive, if advertising means docs are influenced into peescribing a tiny bit more or patients are pressing docs about particular drugs it is very worth it.

Shouldn't need to advertise drugs at all. Frankly, it shouldn't be allowed.

I suppose. Price wouldn't really matter in the EU since we pay very little for it either way. In Sweden, you never have to pay more than 1300 SEK (roughly 126 USD) in total during a year for doctor visits (including mental health), which also includes prescription drugs. Over the counter medication is not included in that, unless prescribed by a doctor. So we'll just take whatever the doctor prescribes. And based on how we react to the medicine the doctor can prescribe something else/adjust dosage. As soon as you hit the 1300 SEK ceiling, any doctor visits (excluding drop-in visits), mental health visits or medicine is free.

I mean, we can tell the doctor that we want to try a drug or treatment we've read about and they can prescribe it if it's something they think might help, but the goal is to find the treatment that works best for you. Not to sell you the medication that costs the most.

Mind you, there are cases in Sweden where big pharma will essentially bribe doctors to prescribe their medicine in more cases since they still get paid for it by the Swedish government, but yeah.

My doctor tried to get me on one of these once after insurance it would come out to about 800 a month.

Americans clamor for things like this but get told there's no money for it then go spend billions on the military and saving billionaires.

The monoclonal antibodies my wife is taking are $5-6k per infusion, and she has to get 18 doses of 2 different ones. Literally 300k+ of meds. (of course our deductible maxed after the first so it's all on insurance)

It is absolutely goated not hearing medical ads. I'm sure that will change in the UK, but right now. It's delicious. No ads at all on the BBC either, but the conservatives are trying to kill that service along with anything good in life.

Man if you only watched my TV pharm ads are all I fucking get

Edit: and it's a giant conflict of interest too: insurance companies will only pay for the less expensive options before they'll authorize newer ones while pharmacy companies come out with new indications or brands to avoid losing money on the old ones.

Best part of upgrading from Hulu with Ads to no ads is no more pharma advertisements for me. Why yes, I'd love to take this medication where all the potential side effects are worse than the disease.

It's always jarring seeing a time when conservative bent comedy had the potential of being funny.

TMZ says at a party at a Las Vegas skating rink, Chris Brown allegedly began yelling and threatening a woman who was ignoring him, when Usher intervened, Usher and Brown went outside behind their entourage’s tour bus and had an argument that left Usher with a bloody face.
