My only guess is that they don't think the fraction of the plate Heim gave him was enough to be considered "a path to the plate." He is set up basically on top of it. I think there was still enough visible to say he had a path.

yeah this makes no sense. the rule even states the catcher can’t be called for interference if he’s making a play on the ball (and also if the runner is out by a considerable margin it’s not supposed to be called either). managers just gonna challenge every out at home and pray, like challenging a catch in the nfl

As a Giants fan I'll take it, but MLB needs to clarify that shit and fast.

I get protecting the catcher, but yeah any manager worth their salt is going to challenge it if it's close.

When Merrifield started this whole gongshow it was discussed that the rule is you can't be blocking the plate unless the ball takes you there. In a lot of these challenges, the catcher is already set up before the throw even happens, which is where the problem is.

It still needs to be fixed. Being out by damn near 30 feet and getting called safe on a technicality is bullshit, and for once I don't blame Padres fans for being salty.
