SummerSlam is WWE's #2 PPV (imo its ahead of RR, to kinda bridge the gap between WM seasons), there are 8 championship belts and four are not being defended (Rhea Ripley, Austin Theory, men and women's tag titles). The only one that cant be defended is the mens tag titles due to KO's injury.

I get theres only so much time, but half the titles not being defended on one of the big four ppv's?

SummerSlam would have benefited from being a 2 night event this year. But that’s hard to plan for several months out when you rent the building. Who’d have thought they would have enough compelling stories to fill out a 2 night show and have to cut big time matches for time?

Potentially unpopular opinion, but I don't like the 2-night format. Is it an argument that the promotion is perhaps too big, has too many shows during the week, or that they're running too many story lines? Perhaps. There was just a lot of WM stuff I simply did not care about when you could've just condensed the higher quality, more popular programs into a singular night. The idea of "cooldown matches" where more meh stuff gets wiggled in between also feels alien to me, which honestly feels like the ancestor of the 2-night format. Some stuff being just for TV is fine, too.

But there's also the issue of titles not really feeling special anymore. When they're not being defended, the holder disappearing (for months), "records" being padded, or questionable mid-card pushes toward challengers, it's possible for these matches to feel lackluster compared to more storied rivalries. And while titles changing hands on TV does happen, it's usually the PPVs where they were expected.

Isn't this the reason they tried to have branded PPVs like 15 years ago, because incorporating stories of 2 separate shows, especially with a strong women's division, was tough?

Regardless, I don't think every PPV needs to have every belt on the line. Even in the 90s that didn't happen.
