I'm not as down on the team as I think a lot of people are and will be after this, but I expect big changes are coming this offseason, and not just to the on-ice team.

The Leafs are not built for the playoffs. They can run it back all they like, but until they address the glaring holes in their bottom 6, on defense and in net, they're not going to win anything. The same thing that was said last year... and the year before.

They rely way too much on their top heavy offense, and when the games get tight, physical, and powerplays become far and few between, they just don't have the depth or structure to play a style that can win them 4 playoff rounds. Especially when most of their best players just don't show up when it matters most.

In this 7 game stretch of 2 goal or fewer, they had I think 12 different goal scorers. They had enough scoring depth. They held leads in the first three games of this series. The powerplay went I think 3/13 in this series which is simply not good enough. The team can win, but the defense, and the coach, let them down. Yes, Matthews and Marner need to score, but no, I don't think they were horrendous in this series. Sheldon Keefe has been outcoached in every playoff series he's been in with the Leafs. The bottom half of the D core just cannot bring themselves do to the smart thing with the puck and just fucking clear it, and the entire defense always looks discombobulated because Keefe is changing the pairings every game and no one gets familiar with anyone else. The powerplay struggles and no changes get made to the personnel or the strategy for the fifth year in a row.

This team was bigger, stronger, and meaner than any Leaf team the past 6 years. This was a completely winnable series, lost by the coach. And for the love of God, fire Justin Holl into the sun this offseason.

In 70 playoff games there have been 539 minor penalties called (not including bench minors), or 7.7 per game
The final regular season games in April, consisting of 111 games, there were 720 minor penalties called, or 6.48 per game.
In the first 10ish days of the regular season, consisting of 86 games, there were 701 minor penalties called, or 8.15 per game.
A 10 day range around new years, consisting of 79 games, there were 526 minor penalties called, or 6.65 per game.

The start of the season is the outlier likely due to the refs calling it too tight and were told to scale it back and/or players adjusting to the standards.

If someone wants to say "those are all offsetting penalties there are less powerplays in the playoffs", go ahead, I'm not hyperanalyzing all the penalties beyond what I can get on the nhl.com stats page. I did just realize theres a PP Opportunities field, but I'm not doing all those numbers again.
