A C&D notice is an indication you're annoying the company and they may escalate, given Aerec could not afford to fight them legally he would probably cave in a week if they sent one. You know what people with a lot of money don't do? Take donations, you know why? cause paypal give your personal information out to authorities if ordered to do so and his paypal email is known now due to taking them.

It's not a passion project, it's a bunch of unimpressive people that can't make anything themselves, getting kudos from people who don't know any better for running something someone else setup for them to download. Any success has more to do with Ninja streaming it for weeks than anything anyone associated it with it did. If not a FFXI private server, he would of probably setup a runescape or wow one.

Catseye is more of a passion project than Horizon is, and that's not saying much. At least they are putting effort in to do something.

NCSoft has given a license for a private City of Heroes server. This is pretty cool as its another example alongside with Everquest's Project 1999, that gives legitimacy to privately run servers. Granted, Everquest 1999 is a much stronger example since that's a game where it has progression servers and a retail version in addition to a retail sequel that also gets yearly expansions. But still, it's really cool that some companies are going down the path of "Hey....it's not a copyright/trademark issue if we give permission to these people operating these unaffiliated servers"
