I mean he isn't trolling at all, by the actual definition of the word and/or doing what a "troll" actually does. He genuinely believes the stuff he's saying.

As much as I loathe their (PS) existence, there is nothing quite like FFXI dummies stirring up drama. XIV wishes it were this stupid.

Pretty sure they are just as dumb, but because there's nothing competitive in XIV people don't have to interact and thus don't conflict.

In spicys case he's trying to compete about how his PS is better

There's stupid stuff aplenty. Latest fad is the content drought due to expansion development feeding a vocal minority of streamers with the idea that XIV is dying, has gotten way less content per expansion cycle before, and the usual dog shit about how if they only just did things old MMOs did, everything would be peachy keen even if Yoshida has been upfront about saying they don't design the game to be no-lifed and that breaks to do other things are encouraged.

Personally, my stance has always been that XIV panders too much to the dungeon/raider crowd and that what that group tends to bemoan as casual content isn't really, especially for those who aren't MMO vets. The open world is dead by design, and not because there aren't Kings or other competitive content. There's just nothing to be done that isn't harshly time gated or ultimately falls short of current exchanges. Nevermind the catch 22 of more challenging content for those who don't enjoy the instance shuffle and therefore get to be told they don't deserve good things by the same dungeoneers/raiders. Even more superficial elements like housing and the glamour system is just people trying to scrape by with undercooked and limited systems. Of course, social interaction predicated on entertainment is never content if it doesn't somehow translate to improving the parse.

Now, you'll get other stupid stuff here and there like what certain classes should be doing in XYZ, the green DPS obsession, the hypocrisy of hating CT but preferring it pop for faster clears/EXP, those hating on Manderville relics because they afford content choice instead of funneling into dead/repetitive things, and other little odds and ends. It may seem small potatoes compared to XI stuff, but as someone that tried the distance themselves from direct absurdities, it's pretty much all the same to me. Whether it's a failure of SE's coding or people being giant children is case-by-case. They're not even mutually exclusive, either.

More drama over Horizon, Square taking down streamers covering it.

    https://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/5...erver-streams/

The problem with Horizon is there are some truly special individuals associated with it that are using their money to boost the server in any way they can.

    Kipling said this:

"myself and other server admins pay for the costs out of our own pockets. I typically chip in 500 bucks every couple months personally. Because enough of us do it we maintain the costs. Horizon collects no money and we don't even have advertising enabled on any our platforms - this is purely a money draining hobby for the sake of it."

    https://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/5...ly-fee#3683020

When you have people like this that are throwing money around on something they don't even own, do you really think they also won't also pay for advertising and financial incentives to smaller streamers and youtubers (a thing that is continually brought up) too?

The person running the server might not even know they are doing things in his servers name, when you're willing to throw lots of money around as they admit in a continual manner and there are numerous people doing it, then it's not hard for that to add validity to claims of:

Paying streamers to play the game, especially at launch.

Bot boosting of creators who cover the game as an incentive to keep doing it (this is really cheap, there are plenty of sites that will push bots to boost your viewcounts, likes, comments etc). It's not even expensive.

The people doing all this spending and pushing of Horizon are going to need counseling if this thing ever gets shut down.

Eden streamers got hit too, so doesn't seem to just be a Horizon specific thing. They likely started the fire but it seems like the entire village is in danger of their house burning down.

It's probably not, and regularly throwing it in SEs faces with heavy levels of self-promotion and poaching probably wasn't a good idea either. Consider the streamers to be SE knocking at the front door. We should all hope they don't walk in.

You mean setting your private server up to try to directly compete with retail and having people advertise on retail related mediums would put you in the sights of SE's legal department?

Honestly, even congregating here or on AH is pants on head. XI may not be the driving force of these boards anymore, but SE isn't ignorant of its existence. That said, yeah, the moment money gets involved, you can figure the lawyers start salivating.

Suppose I'm old enough to come from a time where fan sites didn't openly permit discussion about private servers because it was effectively piracy and was a good way to shit can any good will from the host company when they found out. Not the BG ever really gained that distinction, but could kinda figure only 4 real NA sites existed that pandered to the game in its peak. In this case, we probably have a mix of the game's age and the language barrier keeping the bigger servers "safe". I won't shed a tear for SE possibly losing out on a few hundred subs from people who'd never play anyway and just leeching, but streaming anything is a pretty good way to bring unwanted attention and big names (whether we personally think they're big or not doesn't matter) doing it just lit the fuse.

Otherwise, my experience with things back in the day was that hosts were also more cautious. Perhaps you needed a referral or that was an application/trial process. Basically some added layer of security to avoid narcs in good faith. Clicking a link and having an email address may certainly make things easier for administrators, but the ease of accessibility, including visibility, has its costs. Anyone cast out, be it for good reasons or just because they upset the clique(s) are almost incentivized to run to the owner out of spite, too. With the pull some streamers bring, you'd also be an idiot to chase viewership over a certain size. Any sort of money or favors exchanged behind closed doors we'll probably never know about because what amounts to P2W cheating just invites a different sort of drama.

Most people stopped caring because beyond receiving a C&D, there's no repercussions provided you abide. At least in every case I'm aware of that didn't end up costing the company severe amounts of money. No point to filter something that ultimately leads to nothing.

That's not to say they can't sue the pants off of you. They can, they just generally don't because the people behind the scenes never made enough doing what they were doing to be worth going after.

Blizzard v. Bossland is a good example of what happens when you make too much money off the back of someone else's shit.

Horizon has brought in the idea within the XI community that there is nothing wrong with private servers of a game that is still being supported at all, even though they are obviously cancerous to a smaller games profitability. You're taking a product a company is still paying money to support via wages etc and offering a shittier meme version of it for free, cutting their profits by your actions and burning any corporate goodwill too. Square could shut down XI tomorrow if they wanted, the profits it makes are barely worth the effort but they keep it running because they know people love the game and it's still making a decent enough profit currently.

This has lead to a mindset of some users and a lot of admins from Horizon exclusively, that going around and advertising and shilling their private server on Twitch, Youtube and nearly everywhere you can talk about FFXI now is fine. Even in the wider community it's been accepted by many now, with XIah making sections for private servers too now. It's been normalized that much. What's next, is Scragg gonna offer an official RMT section to buy and sell gil on XIah?

It's become so bad that now users of Horizon see retail as competition and an avenue to poach players from to desperately keep their players numbers up. It's not just a server people can go back and play old XI again, it's damaging retail servers by its users and admins actions and the mindset changes it ushered in. If the owner made a statement to its users and staff telling them not to promote the server like this, it would quell a lot of the problems but they won't cause they want their users and staff to do it. All because it's a massive ego project for them and they want it to get bigger at any cost to anything else.
