Solid viewership with each stream getting about 125k views. Teams are all unbranded for now. And there's also bodychecking allowed. The rulebook is identical to IIHF Women's Hockey rules, but it's been officiated quite lenient compared to international play.

They can definitely afford it. Whether or not they SHOULD afford it is another question completely. The cap goes up by 4M next season. Matthews' new extension kicks in next season so he's getting a raise of ~1.3M. Willy's new contract will also kick in next season and he's due for a roughly ~4.5M (on the higher end) increase. Those two extensions are nearly covered just by the cap increase. They also have Murray, Bert, Domi, Klingberg and Samsonov coming off the books. At that point it's also only one more season of JT at 11M and his next contract will certainly be for significantly less.

I know people are going to go ballistic over the Willy number, but IMO you're not replacing him with two 6M players and coming out a better team. And that's ignoring that you're going to have to try to replace him with other FAs in the first place. The Leafs do not have much trade capital to work with. If they let him walk, they're not going to be able to replace his production for less than it would cost to have just signed him in the first place. This guy has had 2 career-best seasons in a row now. I'll happily take the devil I know, even if he's pricey.

For future reference, any Canadian "paper" with Sun in its name is worthless rage-clickbait garbage and not to be acknowledged. The Ducks twitter gave them exactly what they wanted unfortunately.
