I wish there was a way to make the AI mean or at least not fucking spineless. Writing parts of my doctoral paper and submitting it to chatGPT to give me a ball park "review" and it's like "Wow master, this is amazing piece of work and you are an intellectual genius"....fucking stop, just review it and give me fucking feed back. Instead all of the feedback is worthless bullshit, glad I have coworkers and friends to also bounce parts of it off of.

There was a blog article I found referenced in one paper that is no longer there, I couldn't find it on the wayback machine so I asked chatGPT to find it for me and stated it wasn't on the website anymore or wayback, it's reply was "Yeah looks like a 404, I would try the wayback machine"

lol, I am rarely glad that I wasted my life in grad school, but it has at least thoroughly innoculated me against techno-optimism when it comes to biology.

These guys are so high on their own fucking supply that they really shouldn't reproduce, so maybe this is the problem solving itself.

These guys are used to working with computers, and computers are easy. Unless you get super esoteric, computers basically do what you tell them to. If someone describes an app to you that does X, where X sounds remotely plausible, you can be pretty goddamned confident that it is possible to build an app that does X because computers just fucking work and they are logical.

The real world is super complicated and doesn't afford you that level of certainty about the plausibility of any proposal. That why "tech investors," who are really software investors, and even "tech companies" that are actually software companies regularly get their faces burned off when they try to invest in even hardware, let alone biology.

Hardware means you need to produce and distribute something physical and it needs to work and not cost too much, which are all problems that software doesn't have. To oversimplify only a little, software distribution is virtually free, once you write it once it is written forever, and the potential sale price "at scale" utterly dwarfs any potential cost to produce it so unit economics basically don't matter.

Biology has a distinct set of problems. You can literally know how a computer works and if it fails to work that way when it runs your software then it isn't your problem. You don't really know how anything in biology works and if it fails to work as you expect it IS your problem (e.g. medicine killing people). You still have the hardware problems of manufacturing, distribution, and cost structure with medicine, for instance, but you also have to hope you aren't giving people cancer that will show up in 20 years. Additionally, there is a very real chance that your good, theoretically sound idea just plain won't work in reality. In fact, it is super unlikely to. Tech is about having a good idea and executing. Biology is about having a thousand plausible good ideas, executing all of them, and coming up with another thousand.

Biotechnology like BMIs is kind of a special hell where software people think the brain is a computer and thus they should be able to interface with it as if it has an API, but in reality it is a skull of probabilistic jello and we don't really understand it. You can let basically terminal patients play pong with their brains and that is great, but we are generations from the first real application of a BMI in a neurotypical person.

The reality is that we are a long way from being able to read shit inside your head from outside your skull, so we are talking about an open skull surgery to install something. The hype about noninvasive stuff is fake. I played with versions of it more than a decade ago and there is no reasonable path to improve them beyond that, so I assume it is pure board puffery from Elon again. If you need to open your skull to install something, it better have a killer app that goes way the fuck beyond "replaces an Atari controller."

Meta has started blocking links to ICE List, a website that compiles information about incidents involving Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents, and lists thousands of their employees' names.

ICE List is a crowdsourced Wiki that describes itself as "an independently maintained public documentation project focused on immigration-enforcement activity" in the US. "Its purpose is to record, organize, and preserve verifiable information about enforcement actions, agents, facilities, vehicles, and related incidents that would otherwise remain fragmented, difficult to access, or undocumented," its website states.

Along with notable incidents, the website also lists the names of individual agents associated with ICE, CBP and other DHS agencies. According to Wired, the website's creators said much of that information had come from a "leak," though it appears to be based largely on public LinkedIn profiles.
