Oh boy ai filters for my video games
Oh cool, let's make game characters look like AI slop versions
DLSS has been a wonder and prolly the most important software advance of the generation but dio mio that don't look good
Their showcase demos required a dedicated 5090 just for the DLSS processing, in addition to the 5090 powering the game, so don't expect to see a consumer version at that level any time soon.
I just want more path-tracing enabled games really. Some of the shit I'm seeing in their demos I don't see why PT couldn't just also do it if the texture materials were better set up.
They're obviously going to scale it to work on one card. Honestly the lighting changes look great. I want to see what it does to a more cell shaded game though. And I want to see it with the settings dialed back, I don't need the character models to look too ai-ified.

That's the other thing too. I couldn't find any examples of a dark environment when I scrolled through the examples. Every NPC looked like they had a studio light hitting them from the front, which may not be the actual lighting case in the game world.
The other thing for me was noticing a lot of screenspace lighting issues at the edges of the screen in the Oblivion demo that wasn't there on the DLSS5-off examples, or the shadow smearing present in other ones like AssCreed Shadows. That kind of thing breaks the effect for me if they can't get it cleaned up before it hits consumer cards, because it just further emphasizes my distaste for how blurry modern games are.
"Oh it looks photo real!", yeah but don't whip the camera or be in an intense action scene. Slow camera pans only.
If they could find a way for the model to not make faces look like they're run through a bunch of Instagram filters that could be pretty cool for some games.
Nvidia claims that the end goal, this is just an early preview of the tech. They're also saying it will be available by Fall of this year.
Joking aside, the environmental lighting looked improved in all their examples. Assassin Creed environments looked downright photo realistic. The character models and lighting looked great to me, especially in motion. The details are all there in the dlss5 off mode, but just look way sharper and expressive in dlss5. I def want to see more

Aside from the one shot with the buildings where it turned wooden rooftops into metal. I expect this to need a lot of iterating to not have blatant issues, similar to how DLSS1 was crap until 2 came around. That or for games to start feeding more information to DLSS so it can better hallucinate what it should. We also don't know how well this works in more stylized games. The Hogwarts one was pretty terrifying for something that was a blend of realistic/styled.
That does remind me that we haven't heard much about AI materials in awhile.
Putting AI estimated Photo-Realism onto Video games only amplifies that very creepy, slightly off, uncanny valley effect AI produces.. for me anyway.
I mean I can't deny the technology is very impressive but I don't think I'll be using it.
oof lol. Knew it was coming but damn this looks ass lol. The gaming population is already on the anti ai bandwagon. This is not going to go well.
Don't most games allow you to select which DLLS version you want to use, or none at all?
This is a nothing-burger and I'm sure they will make adjustments to this version, after the backlash anyway.
