I wonder if we're going to start seeing more of this. City of Heroes getting officially approved to run a private server or whatever the deal was there was the first time I've personally seen a dev/publisher approve a community project for games past their prime. Gut says it'll never become widespread though.

Steam related but applies to many platforms. According to steam support your account is not transferrable when you pass away and even if you have a will. Its not something I’d deliberately worry too much but still demonstrates the issues with digital ownership. Many other platforms are like this, ie Sony where they state that the account is totally non-transferrable and they may revoke your access at anytime, recall the unreasonable bans where people weren’t even able to find a contact to assist them.

Apple differentiates itself here with their Legacy contact system, where you can specify a legacy contact that’ll inherit everything your account has, purchases cloud data, etc. It is also pretty straightforward and simple process, so it is doable.

Maybe I'll just leave my Steam log in info to my son on a slip of paper. Even if I make it to 80, no one at Valve is going to know, maybe I magically live to 100. That's an easy 2 decades at least of my gaming library he'll have access to.
