Wonder what they'll do with all the work they've put into it. The presser mentioned exploring options for it's future. Can't imagine we'll see a Realm Reborn situation from it, but maybe they'll repackage it as an offline experience with the story stuff they created or something.

It'll re-release as F2P like all the other failed hero shooters try to do and be left for dead 6 months later.

100M budget to last two weeks, lol.

I don't know wtf is happening lately. It seems like the PC and gaming worlds are failing apart.

There is a correction occurring where a lot of overconfident studios are having to face the music that they do not, in fact, get to make whatever they want and the clueless lemmings (read: gamers) will lap it up no matter what.

Like I said in the Mana thread. Gamers have been very vocal about identifying good games and what they want to play. Many studios have listened and profited massively from this. Others took it as a personal attack and more or less replied with "Sure buddy, we'll show you what you REALLY want to play" - cue the clown show.

The Concord failure is very obvious. The average gamer wants to play as, and play against, characters they are attracted to. This is just human nature and should be clear. They purposefully made a bunch of ugly ass characters and expected people to just buy it anyway, despite immediate and overwhelming feedback prior to release.

I mean the problem is right as this was about to release, Deadlock started getting big and exploded when they let the NDA drop and completely took a dump on the all the Hero shooters by actually doing something very different with it. Players didn't want or need another Overwatch style hero shooter, they'd already grown board of the ones that already existed. They were just completely out of touch with what the game needed to do and they poured 7 years down the drain.

Can't disagree with this. So many devs see how big the video game market is and think they can release any trash they want and get a good enough piece of the pie. It don't work like that homiesss

That and it's just an average, mediocre game that looks and plays like a bunch of other games that everyone else is already playing and enjoying. There's no real reason to jump ship and start playing Concord over any of them at all.

The game is apparently not terrible, it just has absolutely nothing going for it to make it a choice over anything else out there.

It's Walmart Guardians of the Galaxy mashed together with Walmart Overwatch. It was completely soulless, and I'm still stunned this is the result of 8 years of development and a 100M budget.

$40 and offers no innovation other than a weekly storyline no one asked for. Another over promised and underdelivered product that Sony threw too much money at.

lmao yes, this ain't rocket science or weird boner science. it's a mid to bad product in an oversaturated market with poor marketing and 0 extant customer base. Creative Assembly wasted 80 million on their Hyenas shooter, deeply alienated their Total War player base, and Sega canceled it before it even released when they realized there was no chance of profitability in the same genre.

there have always been flops in the industry but with more vidya + easier/cheaper access to them than ever gotta bat higher to get customers than the old days when options were quite limited. unless you're Madden or CoD ofc then you can keep churning out the same slop and 10 million units will be moved by loyalists.

It's gotta be among the worst if not the worst genre to put out something soulless and uninteresting too. These games are played in perpetuity and most people stick to one. If you're gonna throw your hat in the ring it better be totally amazing or totally unique, ideally both. Certainly can't be neither.

This isn't Soulslike games where you can crank out 50000 ripoffs and largely succeed because people like me are masochists that fiend for a new one 24/7.

When I was at Evo back in July a bunch of my friends there who all work in the video game industry were all talking about how awful it looked, even though some of them are Sony employees.

It completely bombing wasn't a surprise except apparently to the people directly involved in making/publishing it

Between this, Suicide Squad, Anthem, Avengers, Foamstars and some others I'm sure I'm missing, I think it speaks more that audiences are becoming:

    a) more aware that major publishers are just trying to milk them for more money
    b) people only have a finite amount of time
    c) tired of the genre

Then there's corporate greed, which is in its own category entirely.

Personally I couldn't be happier they are failing. Not that I want to see developers out of jobs. Most of the time they're just designated to a project and looking for work. I get it. For every one good developer, there's 50 shitty ones. I am hoping we are at the ceiling for this shit and the genre/model starts to die out, but I think it'll be a couple more years before that happens.

Foamstars recently went F2P, so they're hanging around a little longer.

I don't understand how modern studios can unintentionally release so much shovelware.

Back when I worked in the VG industry, we had at least 3 months of tweaking everything back and forth with test audiences. During that adjustment phase, pretty much every aspect of the game was reworked 50 times which drove the devs insane. Every week we hired fresh pairs of eyes, which included normies to hardcore gamers, to make sure to please the largest audience possible. Do modern studios even do this anymore?

And don't get me started with the amount of bugs on release day; it feels like so many studios replaced their QA department with AI if they do any testing at all.

No, it isn't. I am a day 0, high-level Apex player and am in a ton of competitive discords related to the game. Since the first moment Concord was presented, the game was meme'd to hell and the discussion in every single one of those cords was "these characters look like shit" and obviously none of them even gave the game a chance. Most of them give every FPS a shot when it drops, free or not.

Deadlock's success and similar timeline probably impacted it the most, but the game's characters looked like complete shit out-the-gate and very much hurt it.

I remember a decade ago people talking about the possible crash of the AAA market and how even though the casual market are particularly herded and cowed you can still only throw so much slop at them before they too refuse to eat it anymore.
