In my early time so far tooling around the first area, unit composition can be night and day. That also goes for placement; stagger units and dont have multiple in the same column starting out. Lot of enemy spear users will tear you apart if you do.

Your clear Jagen starter pairs really well with the bulky knight and 2nd cavalry unit. Having all 3 makes for a fantastic early tank/hold unit and doesn't really affect your exp growth as the other 2 units still grow at a good pace.

More characters in a unit is better than more units overall.

Honor seems like it comes easy enough, but hold off after unlocking your 4th or 5th unit and 3-4 characters per unit as class promotions become pricey.

I personally like the trainee weapons early on since they give a nice 20-30% exp boost. Even at the cost of 1 or 2 damage.

Upgrading towns and placing a guard there is great for collecting resources, and placing guards doesnt limit them from utilization in combat.

Thats all I can think about right now.

I'm still looking for good guides on min/maxing unit compositions, doesn't seem like there's a ton of info out there yet but people are playing around with it and posting results as they do.

My two favorites so far are Clive/Hodrick/Josef as a tank and bottleneck unit and Chloe/Lex/Aubin as a multi purpose unit.

I have Alain/Travis/Rolf to mixed results, but its an effective enough scout/infiltration unit. Sharon/Auch/Bruno kind of bring up the rear as a mixed damage unit between row physical damage and magic damage, but I just got Yahna for a 2nd mage and need to retool a bit.

personally i love experimenting and the game isn't really that hard so think looking up power-gaming guides rather than tinkering with stuff yourself robs the game of a lot of fun BUT GENERAL TIPOS

like Kirin said it's generally more important to have more units in the same squad than more squads overall, but you'll find a p natural balance in terms of roster expansion because expanding unit sizes gets so steep after 4.

there are more side quests than main quests and they give you a ton of economic benefits, more characters to recruit, new items, honor, levels, etc. it's real easy to grind your characters + overall army by hitting the side content.

in that vein explore with little sprite Alain on the world map. tons of non-battle content to discover throughout the world.

restore and garrison towns ASAP, they autogenerate resources after every battle and it becomes a rolling momentum economy.

don't horde items, they're there to be used, especially as healing is difficult at lower levels until you get some clerics.

speaking of, unit leaders all do different stuff and it is VERRRYYYYYY important to have a magic caster and a cleric as unit leaders as they can assist other units with magic damage + heals respectively

in terms of general unit composition it's good to have a few all-rounder squads that can handle anything but most should prolly be specialist squads designed to kill a unit type, two magic users and a bit of frontline to protect them to annihilate heavily armored tanks that kinda thing. there are a ton of potential squads and a lot of ways to counter the same thing, experiment it up.

I'm at my cap of how many different squads I can unlock and it's so much honor to get up for 4-5 slots, especially now with Promotions! Some new recruits about to start languishing in purgatory until I can make my army bigger.

ye honor becomes the big improvement impediment by mid game

also p sure the cast of characters is 60-some if you're sparing lives so you literally can't fit everyone in with the 50 unit limit

70 named characters (you can obtain all of them in a single playthough), and you can only run 50 per mission. The game needs a damned "unequip all" feature, but UI was never Japan's strong suit.

Perhaps in a patch down the road.

Figuring out what equipment to run and on whom is a big weakness of mine, as well as setting gambits, skill order, formations, squad set up, and anything else that doesn't involve charging straight into the other team.

The weapon design of this game is so spot-on Ogre Battle. No real linear progression, the item that you find as a reward or in a random town might last the unit you put it on the next 20 battles or more. In Ogre Battle I would come across items I would equip units with and never remove for the rest of the game.

Still trying to work out the best accessories for each unit though.

ye it's nice to have build-dependent equipment rather than a linear upgrade system, i gave bow bro a bow that buffs all air units in his row and now his squad went all airborne after being a simple phalanx + bow unit

builds can get p complicated with accessories and there's never enough. i've found AP/PP manipulation is often the strongest thing you can do, when you start chaining abilities/items to give units more you can get stupidly extended combos.

I saw one dude has a set up that lets Hilda do 2 back-to-back lightning drops before the other team even gets a turn.

Absolutely ridiculous how much positioning and gambits matter. Have had multiple times now where the battle forecast has me getting wiped out, I switch some units around in the pre-battle organize screen and coast to an easy win instead.

Came across a bug. Maybe it's related to the speed boost map action or not, I don't know. But you can be pinned up against a wall that the unit cannot traverse (so cavalry and unmounted people) by another unit and if you are right on top of eachother and they are the aggressor, and you're at zero stamina or resting, they can continue to attack you until the unit dies and you have no recourse but to let it happen. Sat there for 15 or so turns healing in futility trying to get out of the situation to no avail.

It's also a great way to optimize your squads since it takes the guesswork out of seeing if it will work or not.

I did that to myself the first time I did the cavalry valor action. I assumed it'd stop me in front of the enemy, but it placed me behind them against a wall with no opportunity to do anything other than to repeatedly get attacked til dead since they were flyers and that team didn't stand a chance. I didn't really take it as a bug, I did the action to do some chip damage while my main unit was moseying on up. Just took it as a learning experience.

So it turns out you can let units with 0 stamina remaining just sit there, you don't have to rest right away. They can't move, but they can still defend themselves just fine and won't get First Striked. So many wasted smoked nuts.

Doing exactly the same, hoping I find a 20-something sigil to grind on now that my whole army is 19-21.
