I chose Scarlett because that's where the narrative seemed to be directing but honestly I probably should have gone with Melisandre or Liza.

I also could have picked Sharon since she was already in my Alain squad but I felt bad breaking up her and Ochlys.

My Ochlys unit (Ochlys, Bruno, Ithilion, Sharon, Chloe) was near unstoppable through Drakenhold and Elfheim, but is getting demolished in Bastorias. Which is weird, because my infantry evade unit (Yunifi, Travis, Melisandre, Dinah, Rolf) is demolishing almost everything in their path. Any tips?

I also think, wholesale, I need to finally build out a magic focused unit and reassign Ithilion and Chloe to units better suited to them.

As for the waifu, Berengaria for the attitude and Rosalinde's affinity dialogue have me torn between the two. Scarlett is absolutely the "default" option, but it just feels so vanilla and bland even as the default option. I will say the dialogue between Rosalinde and Scarlett is great though for their affinity conversations.

what works changes p good throughout the game, but if you're watching the battles you should get a sense of what's going on. as you say infantry evade units are ruling right now as Bestoria is full of hard hitting beasties. similarly high evade flyers who are anti-infantry should dominate the continent. sounds like the Ochyls and Bruno frontline just ain't robust enough to survive the rampaging beasties. throwing a shaman with gladiators like Bruno produces a super robust unit, the debuffs + glad's huge health pool and self-healing make them hard to kill.

as you go through the game you can constantly tinker with optimal squads or just roll through areas with your death squads and everyone else in a supporting role. near every map can be cleared with only 1 or 2 units that can beat anything else the enemy has, everyone else supporting and mopping up. dealer's choice. honestly by the end i built squads led by Alain, Ochrys, and Berengaria so strongly they spearheaded everything and everyone else was support.

What do you guys suggest as the starting difficulty?

I am after a reasonable challenge but Fire Emblem normal difficulty was a story mode for me. Does the normal difficulty hold up here?

I have had a few challenging spots on Expert, but nothing that cant be solved with "Returning to Overworld" in the menu and retooling units or improving gear. I think this is honestly a really good feature that you can just hit reset on any battle and go back to retool.

With how far you can get on only 2-4 fully kitted units, I think normal would be a little too easy and the meat of this game is in the combat options more than the story.

I found a set up for Auch that lets him dual cast Trinity Rain at the start of every battle. 90% of squads he could instantly wipe out at that point, but in Albion he was almost useless.

Just started and some people want me to like free them from bandits or whatever. Can I just ignore that for a minute until I'm ready?

as far as I'm aware there's no actual time constraints on anything, the only thing that might mess you up is a couple characters are only recruitable if you recruit another npc aligned with them first, but even that's p rare

From what I read, you can ignore literally everything and grind to endgame if you wanted. I'm not aware of anything timed that you may lose either, just like AG said, some characters are unrecruitable if you don't recruit another character that's involved in their story.

    Generalization, but going off memory:

    Cavalry > Infantry
    Flyers > Cavalry
Mages > Armored (except Radiant Knights) and Dragon Knights
Archers and other true strikers > Scouts/Flyers
Scouts > Anyone without accuracy/true strike
    Infantry > Archers and Mages

Some of those have innate bonuses to/against specific troop types, while others just counter the units really well. Races are a bit different and I don't think they have any innate weaknesses to troop type, but there is effectively killer gear that has buffs against them.

I’m playing Alain what I consider to be sensible when it comes to sparing or recruiting

Like this one dude literally tore up the town and killed people with bandits, and he wants to give me a sob story about being broke to buy meds for his sister? Ok but I literally just saw you murder people. Straight to jail.

Coincidentally a member of his gang is pillaging a church and killing people and he has the same sister sob story? THE GODS DEMAND BLOOD RETRIBUTION.

Oh this mage dude killed some bandits because he wanted to explore a ruin and he’s got mommy issues? Eh, you can stay.

I’m probably gonna end up executing someone really useful but oh well.

Recruit them all, but leave them guarding some town in the middle of the desert and never use them in parties.

I know the story isn't the games strong suit, but one storyline drop has bothered me. They had this big deal about a plague encompassing a decent sized area of Cornia along with a cleric recruit and then...nothing. No mention of the plague affecting other towns on other continents or refugees from that area coming to other continents and thanking the liberation army for contributing to curing the disease. Would have been really cool to tie into the larger narrative.
