Coming off an All Star and "only" getting 14 million AAV seems kinda wild.

But very few players would pass up the stability of a 10 year contract so makes sense.

Actually seeing people speculate he was most likely looking at the same 140 mil for a 5 or 6 year contract but they just made it 10 to lessen the tax load

As I been reading on reddit - Smith will be under contract through his age 39 year. He would not be getting $14M/yr at 34 for being a backup catcher/DH/1B if he got like a $100M/5yr deal now. At best $8M/3-4yrs @34. It's about the same value at the end.
