i think it's the fragment of his soul as a child who was forced to paint maintaining the world and all his childhood creations, but the beings and people in it are intelligent design status. at the least they certainly have free will and full autonomy, as Aline's painted Verso can go against her wishes in his attempt to push her out and destroy the canvas.

they really put me through the wringer with esquie, at first i thought he was just an overtly goofy french joke, then you eventually find out why he is so child like, and then the esquie doll alicia leaves at versos grave rip

When a Painter uses or creates a canvas they impart a piece of them into it and that world was one of Verso's first canvases that he created so when he died, Aline/Paintress knew that a piece of him was still stuck there being forced to maintain it's existence. But in a canvas world the like life force or chroma has free-reign given the context of the rules the painter probably put in place. The original world may have been mostly Gestrals and then Esquie but when Aline went in, she may have added people and stuff to make it more like a normal french family/world for her to escape in and spend time with Verso

If you help all of them and don't kill them you can get 100 colour of lumina later in the game, so fyi

Now that I am in act 3. When/where is this?

In a zone called the Fountain, it's west of where you first got to the world map

I've read you don't have to necessarily help 100% of them, but either a certain percentage or certain key NPCs.

I think if you just talk to him at the fountain after helping at least 1 without killing them he gives you the 100 Lumina

Ok been working through sidequests and optional dungeons. I'm lvl 63ish now. By what level should I get the final boss done if I don't want it to be super easy?

Finished this on Friday. A masterpiece for sure. The third act does suffer from really bad balancing issues if you do all the side stuff before heading to the final fight. It trivializes everything.

Ok been working through sidequests and optional dungeons. I'm lvl 63ish now. By what level should I get the final boss done if I don't want it to be super easy?

yeah, about now should give you a fair challenge. Some side bosses and even regular battles give you millions of EXP so any further exploration will risk you getting overlevelled.

In my case I ended up one shooting the final boss and the entire final dungeon was a story mode (single AoE attack and all were done).

i did it low 60s on expert and found it semi-trivialized, wouldn't wait much longer

i wouldn't have it any other tbh i love the amount of side content they add and the freedom to tackle Act 3 in any order you desire. on a replay / NG+ may rush the ending just so it's hard as hell.
