Question for anyone who's finished - I haven't yet so, no real story spoilers but maybe an interface one -
    Spoiler: show
Are you meant to go straight to the next objective after the epilogue? Or is there more side stuff you can reasonably do on the over world first that aren't super bosses/cosmetic challenges?

all your party members except Sciel give you side quests at Relationship level 5 that you need to complete for them to get to 6, those quests are a good step in the right direction before doing the really hard stuff, I think Maelle's is meant to be done first since her's is a full on dungeon you can level in and the others are pretty much just bosses. I think if you only do those it shouldn't make the final boss too easy.

I also got the music trophy @32, Lumiere isn't on the list twice or anything but I did get it in the prologue for sure.

I think the achievement counts each individual song pickup as 1/33, if you get Lumiere from the Mime during the Prologue and pick up the extra copy in the Opera House in the final dungeon at the end I think it counts it as 2/33, even though it's the same song.

So I made a pretty decent build and got to the last fight on the Endless Tower abusing Cheater and death-bomb buffs. Just having problems landing the necessary parries to make it through the last fight.
    Spoiler: show
Pattern starts with Sciel auto-death + the break-point on death + a bunch of buffs/AP to party. Verso has first strike lumina so he's guaranteed to attack first. With 9 AP and the maxed Contorso he immediately breaks the enemy with Phantom Stars and moves up to S-rank so he can pump damage and apply break. He does damage second round. Sciel goes next and uses Fortune's Fury then Intervention on her turns, immediately putting Verso back into rotation for another two rounds. He does more chip damage and ensures that he leaves mark on for Maelle. Maelle starts off switching to Virtuoso then Stendhal's something to death. (If the enemy got in an attack at some point she will be in Virtuoso already and I lead to Stendhal.) After obliterating most things near the end the multiple high HP enemies meant I'd have to parry/dodge enough for another round until Sciel could buff Maelle for more Stendhal. The problem I'm having now is that Curator & Paintress duo are so tanky that they aren't dying from Stendhal, so the margin for error becomes really small and I get wiped out before I take even one out.

Haven't cleared the story yet and I haven't beat up Golgra to get Maelle's better weapon, so maybe that would make it easier.

You should def do those things you said you didn't do before doing the final fight of the tower lol I just beat it pretty easy but I am like lvl 95~

With that said, all I have left is to get to level 99 and the final super boss. I'm not ready to let go yet

Welp I went and finished the story to get some of my missing pictos from the last level and went through both endings, then went and beat up Golgra.

Is Golgra the best place to farm the Grandiose Catalysts for weapons?

    RE: Ending...

    Spoiler: show
So I understand Verso-Painted wants to free the fragment of Verso-Prime's soul that has to maintain the canvas and that he himself wants to die. This makes sense to me, but my question is whether the existence of that piece of Verso-Prime's soul eternally painting mean every painter needs to leave tortured pieces of their soul like a Horcrux for every painting? If that's the case I don't understand why Verso-Painted would tell Alicia that she could have any life she wanted after she let this canvas go.

I think both endings are beautifully done as they capture Renoir's sentiment that life forces hard choices. Verso-Painted and Renoir-Prime are acting from a paternalistic idea of doing what is best for their family, whereas Aline and Alicia believe they should be able to choose a comforting illusion. It is self-destructive in the absolute sense, it is what makes them happy... and it happens to align nicely with saving the simulated lives of the canvas.

I was confused by the kid at the end though. Is that supposed to be the fragment of Verso-Prime's soul?

Dark Shore is a good place to farm Grandiose catalyst, each enemy drops one, there’s 3 packs of enemies there and each circuit gives you 7.

    as for the ending question.

if you mean the kid hanging out with Maelle in the theater it's one of Gustave's apprentices ya

elsewise i think the fragment of Verso's soul was tortured because it represented the child Verso forced to paint by his parents when what he wanted to do was play piano, then kept alive/painting indefinitely by his mother and sister. the overall metaphor is obvious in that every artist, every creator, leaves a piece of themselves in their creations, but child Verso's soul fragment was weary and tortured specifically because it was something he never wanted to do, and then his existence and its concomitant labor was extended so unnaturally.

and agree on the endings. for being the most prominent antagonist Renoir certainly has the most mature response to grief, but Maelle has only a life of disfigurement, disability, and pain to return to. if it weren't for the other ethical considerations at play i wouldn't blame ol girl for choosing the comfort of a softer world.

Oh yeah I did forget the part of Verso not wanting to paint to begin with. Since everyone talks about the beauty of the canvas Verso makes, I forgot part of him probably didn't want to make the canvas at all.

The beauty of this conflict is that we understand why Painted Verso and Curator Renoir feel entitled to coerce Alicia and Aline into dealing with their grief, but all the while we can sympathize with Alicia and Aline's choice and recognize they have entitlement to make decisions others disapprove of.

At the same time we are also caught in the middle between Verso's soul and the canvas. I'm looking at Verso as a metaphor for Atlas, sustaining the world of the canvas and suffering eternally for it. Atlas has the right to want his burden. But the people in the world have the right to want Atlas to keep carrying that burden. And Atlas' family would have the right to prioritize him over strangers.

I think the central theme really is just "Life forces hard choices."

I am leaning towards Maelle's ending being better (I would definitely make the same choice in her position). But what really gets me was that Maelle became extremely hypocritical. By resurrecting Painted Verso, she shows that she didn't respect his choices the same way she did for Painted Alicia. She respected Alicia's choice, she wanted Renoir to respect hers, but when Painted Verso's dying wish is to die she refuses to honor it because it makes her unhappy. I guess that is meant to reinforce that escapism is selfish perhaps and Maelle is acting selfishly, even though saving the canvas might be selfless otherwise.
