It's possible to beat the game in the standard JRPG manner of just overleveling and tanking hits with your face. Parrying and dodging just reduces or eliminates the amount of grinding necessary.
Someone has done a full clear without parries and dodges, including the superboss (which most people cheese because the timings on the dodges are so tight).
Yeah, I've noticed a couple of these. But there are times when it's hard to distinguish. I should probably turn up sound effects or something.
Appreciate the suggestion, but I'm going vanilla for my first playthrough. I'm also not a big fan of mods that make games easier. If that's what I wanted, I'd just lower the difficulty.
You can build a nice shield build later that makes missing parries ok. But Parrying is just so satisfying lol
dude said he's a good parryer in Souls games sure my man will be just fine with a little more practice. to reiterate Chazzy the swoosh sound is critical and will carry you from Act 1 to the end of Act 3, timing off it is more important than the visuals.
This is the dude that kicked my shit in last night:

Cranked my sound effects way up, and while I might vibrate my brain into a concussed state, at least I'm figuring out parrying!
honestly, he was one of the tougher mobs because you're so low level, you have no picto's, luminas or abilities and you only have 2 people
Yeah, he was hitting for nearly twice my healthpool with each swing. On a side note:

I was there for a bit too and had no intention of leaving until he went down. I think I even reloaded a few wins because I wasn't sure how exp worked with dead characters. Hits hard but also goes down quick. You only need a few rounds, it's the perfect "this is what you're in for" introduction.
Yeah, I just beat the first (story) boss:

And now I'm thinking of going back and trying again
Side note: How do I use these extra lumina point items I keep getting? Is that just a thing I haven't unlocked yet?
The game should make it clear when you can use them
Decided to go back and bash my head against it. Took the better part of an hour, but I got it down in the end. Some observations:

Yup I think that boss was most peoples "git gud" moment, and that "this aint your daddy's final fantasy game" realization lol.

Just signing into here I'm done with the game too. Not much to add besides it was nice to play an actual RPG again (but I don't play as much games)
I recommended my friend to play too and sold it to him as:

I browsed the entire thread after beating the game and don't see it mentioned here, but the game director's youtube channel (only 5 short video of him playing devil may cry 5)
SPOILER FOR Devil May Cry 5 warning: The 5 videos is of him fighting and parrying/styling on the final boss. In short, the director is also quite a gamer (especially to pull off this stuff, not to mention on a Blood Palace (the game's extra/challenge mode) on the final boss itself):

Since the discovery of the channel there's a few funny comments:
From the director himself: Looking back on this, maybe I should try making a game with some kind of parry mechanics.
