Maelle's ending is the correct one because it saves a world of sentient people. However it feels wrong because it enables Maelle's self-destruction, the enslavement of painted Verso, and dooms the remaining fragment of Verso's soul to eternal toil as the Atlas of the canvas.

Verso's ending is the wrong one because it entails the death of everyone and everything you spent the whole game fighting for. But feels right because it forces Maelle and Aline to move on with their grief and gives Verso (both versions) his eternal rest.

The canvas people are only sentient because they're shards of Verso's soul, and Verso is dead and expressly voices his wish to be at peace. Verso's ending is the correct one.

Also I cant help but shake my head a bit at people who say they're badly done endings. The whole point of the ending is you are supposed to be upset. That's the whole point. Death and grieving doesn't have a happy ending or silver lining. I think they portrayed that sense of anger and loss beautifully.

Maelle's ending is the feels ending because we want the canvas people we've spent the entire game with to be happy, but we also get reminded of the consequences of this action, ie she is slowly dying and addicted and becoming the new Paintress just like Renoir warned us about.

Verso's ending is the realistic ending because as much as we want to believe, the canvas is NOT REAL LIFE and shouldn't take precedent over real people's lives being at stake, feelings be damned. But they make sure to give us that final send-off for one last feels trip.

They're both bitter-sweet and great, but I lean towards Verso's being the "right" ending.
