But I'm a utilitarian that sympathizes with Verso's ending. The endings are meant to be imperfect. It's like Renoir says, life keeps forcing hard choices.

You choose to be like Verso and move on no matter how hard it is to give things up. Or you choose to cling to what has been lost and destroy yourself in the process like Maelle. But after your choice, the game forces you to feel the guilt for the choice you make.

Finished all the relationship quests and went around collecting some pictos/weapons. Got to Flying Manor. Kill the first 3 bosses ezpz. Get to Dualliste and proceed to eat floor almost immediately. Holy difficulty spike... First enemy to make me think I need to leave and come back with more/better pictos.

the entire game is set in, what is essentially a magical version of a VR Sandbox, just cause Alicia logged into an in game Avatar doesn't put her on equal footing to the rest of the NPC's, you're allowed to have feelings for the NPC's in the same way you would for any other medium designed to make you feel emotional with regards to their story arcs, but at the end of the day when the story is done do you continue to worry about the characters involved that have a sad ending? or do you move on to the next story?
