I've gotten really into coffee over the past few years and I'll just say my go to are things from Kenya or Ethiopia. If you are looking at a brand that is new to you and happen to see one of those, odds are it's at least decent.

for what i select i pretty much go by: notes > roast level > combination of remaining factors (like brand, roast date, blah blah)

so as much as i like an ethiopian (or appreciate a kenyan), if the coffee has unappealing notes to me, i'd be really unlikely to try lol.
