Tried In and Out for the first time this summer. Their fries truly are something horrible, but the sandwiches are competent and ingredients go together great. It's the epitome of doing something simple very well.

I live 5 minutes from what's generally considered one of the best burger joints in the state. A small walk-up/drive through burger and shake dive that's been open since the 60's with delicious burgers cheaper than fast food counterparts.

We do a burger week here too. Local restaurants (and some large chains) will craft up a burger, usually on theme for whatever kind of restaurant or food truck they have or what they're generally known for. They have to be $8. This past year, the Grippo BBQ burger was my fav. BBQ, grippos, and Philly cream cheese (which, holy shit...).

The best fast food burger ranking (assuming the best I've had of each) I can think of, of places I've actually been, is probably like

Culver's
In-n-Out
Freddy's
Shake Shack
Wendy's
Steak & Shake
Hardee's/Carls Jr
Sonic
BK
McDonald's

In reality Wendy's and BK are the lowest 2 because they are never good anymore. The rest I would say are at least fairly consistent.

Same as Tyche though I never have any reason to get any of these places except Culvers or IIO when I'm out of town. I can just go to Jack Browns and have a 10/10 burger for the same price. Among many other places. A prime steakhouse next door to my apartment makes burgers out of the week's leftover grinds and sells a cheeseburger with chips for $10 on Fridays.

BK has GREAT fries when they make em right, but no location does anymore. Franchises fucked the brand up by cutting corners everywhere. I hate wendys and BK now cause of it.

I’m backing Culver’s as well. I’ve tried most of the places on your list, and Culver’s is consistently the best no matter which location you go to. Everything from Wendy’s on down varies so much by location that it barely even feels like the same burger.

Edit: I personally don't get Shake Shack. I've had it twice now and they are disappointing considering the price.
