Sounds like high yield savings account interest? That's why my tax bill was way higher compared to 2023/24. Bank offered a good rate on a money market savings account. This on top of inheritance IRA withdrawals (3 more tax years of them checks.) Owe $2k fed, $1.2k state this year.
Asia is on fire right now..lol

Technically your withholdings are "wrong" if the final number isn't $0, so yeah I guess so. A better word would be different.
My point is that there isn't a reason for someone who filed the same way at the same salary in two consecutive years with no material changes and suddenly have a difference in thousands of dollars to/from. In either direction.
Either the withholdings changed or something was added or omitted from filing that wasn't in TY2024. Synistar mentioned HYSA interest. That's the most likely one, probably. Could also be capital gains earnings or crypto.
Not really for TY2025... the standard deduction increased and so did the SALT cap. If you don't itemize you should have a lower burden federally this year over last unless your wages increased a lot.
All of this goes completely out of the window if you itemize.
I would be combing through those TurboTax prior year documents trying to figure out where the difference is. To be thousands of dollars, it's a huge miss.
Trump's big fat orange bill didn't change very much for 2025 filers. I underestimated the SD increase and so my withholdings were overestimated. I got back a lot of money. That's the general sentiment right now for most filers.
Oh the biggest glaring one can be if you're filing HOH or Single. That's a few thousand dollars in standard deduction money there.
Good point, if someone qualified for HOH in 2024 or prior but had to switch to single in 2025 they would have a significant hit.
Otherwise, standard deductions went up. Combined with tax brackets having a 2% inflation adjustment means standard filers owe less, not more.
Turns out I had 1 dependent on my W4. This caused a 2000 dollars dependent credit that ate into my withholding so my end of year federal withholding was $13. I'm not sure when or why that started, but I changed it today. Be careful out there with those ever changing tax codes and brackets.
Every once in a while somebody chimes in that McDonald's machines are always down because they have like a 3 hour cleaning cycle or something and it runs multiple times a day.
Which like, ok, sure... but why haven't they just stopped using those machines?
