Amazon is in the process of removing 16k positions with another 14k planned for the next quarter. It's across all sectors. AWS is replacing roles with Claude and keeping a skeleton senior programmer crew. Alexa crew was reduced from 847 to 23 and 31 jobs transferred to Bangalore. The layoffs are predicted to create $280M in salary savings.

I hate seeing these articles where some asshole who has been wildly successful (likely due to unprosecutable access to NPI in this case) acts like they have solved the trajectory of human history and can see the future.

Tbf AI coding turned a corner and I could probably be about 5x as effective with it as without it if I was willing to light my brain on fire and context switch constantly. Instead I am hanging out around 2x as effective and working about the same amount.

I find Codex 5.3 medium in a well designed repo is my sweet spot right now. Turning it to extra high sends it down weird paths and takes forever, so I would rather have it do 2/3 of the job quickly and let me correct it. 5.4 doesn't seem like that much of an improvement to me yet. I swapped off of Claude in cursor and that was when I saw the light, but it could be that something was configured incorrectly. I don't think the real gap between Claude and Codex is as large as I found it to be, so I must have been unintentionally hobbling Claude somehow.
