It doesn't, and no athlete getting sound financial advice would want it to. He'd be losing tens of millions in compound interest over the course of his deal. That deal the Canes signed is moronic from the player's perspective.

For individual gains, and making as much cheddar as you can, then sure.

But you're acting like no player in any sport has ever taken a less-than-ideal contract in order to free up resources for the team to acquire more talent and increase their chances at winning it all. The canes deal isn't even a bad deal for anyone involved, it just moves money around so there's more money NOW for them to build with.

To stay on topic, Leafs signed Robertson to a 1 year extension this morning. I guess he finally realized Toronto was actually his best bet to get any playing time this year, and the best way to get traded is to look like you're worth trading for.

He's in a tough spot, too good for the AHL, but needs to prove it in the NHL.

He's good enough to play in the NHL... in the offensive zone. If this guy wants consistent ice time he needs to play some fucking defense. And for a short player he's actually a pretty slow skater. Being small and slow is doing him no favours.
