Trying to keep 'Neko from being cussed out. Good small ethernet hubs that won't break the bank?

So okay. We have swapped internet to Comcrap. Trouble is..

There's not enough Ethernet ports on their router/gateway. I'd like to get a small hub so we can use it to hook up Neko's lappy AND the linux computer, maybe the printer too to free up some ports. Don't need a industrial sized one, 4 ports would be plenty. I'd rather leave a port or two without just in case this would slow the net down a bit for things hooked up to it (to keep The Troll from cussing! He wants a port so he can run his stuff wired..)

So yeah, any good ones that would work without breaking the bank?

May have to do a bit of configuration, but just get an 8 port switch. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-8-Por...s%2C151&sr=8-3

Thanks Melena. That's kinda the plan; the idea is share one port for the close-to-the-gateway stuff, and leave the Troll at least one (He's proly going to be a uuber-moron and want to ignore the hub. But you can't fix that kinda stupid, so not going to try.) I counted about 4 or so close up things. So we need a switch or a hub. Hub would be better since we kind of have to hook our printer direct to get it so we can share it.

I think most unmanaged switches are plug-n-play with no configuration needed. Just find something with the number of ports you need/want and you should be set. Netgear and TP-Link are probably the two most well known brands in the space. You should be able to share the printer easily if everything is on the same network. If not, your Comcast router should be able to do the routing you need but it may be a little finnicky.

Thanks for that Bel; actually the printer is pretty finicky itself. It never wants to let us use it if it's connected wirelessly (UGH) so it has to be wired or no pc/device in the house will find it. Had the same problem with Uverse's gateway, wired or nothing. Anyway it's direct plugged into the Comcast gateway and doing just fine. The trouble is WE NEED MORE PORTS.

Network hubs are a thing of the past, the only hubs you hopefully still have are for USB.
As Bel said, unmanaged switches from brands like TP-Link, D-Link or Netgear are dirt cheap and available with port counts of 5+. They just work right out of the box.

(edited because the "quick reply" field ate the 2nd line of my post...)

Wierd Niya; when I found this which I think is close to what I was looking for: Here's one off Amazon that looks interesting.

So yeah more like a switch but the idea is to split the ethernet; 3 ports is not near enough here.

[edit] Sorry about that then, I guess we got something in the water eating things b/c I didn't realize you'd said that.

I'm going to hijack this thread about switches.

A while back my internet company changed out my modem to one that only had one outgoing port. I connected it to my Eero fine, but when I tried to hardwire my desktop into the Eero it didn't work. I've lived with having the desktop on wireless until I found my D-Link switch in the closet.

Plugged the switch into my modem, and Eero into the switch without issue, but the desktop wired internet just wasn't working. I rebooted computer and powered off the network equipment and that made the desktop wired connect work... but now the Eero wireless doesn't connect.

This all sounds like a port setting on the modem itself. Are you sure you're using the right ethernet cable too?

I got everything working by putting the Eero directly into the modem, then putting the switch into the Eero's secondary port, and the desktop into the switch.

Previously the Eero's secondary port did not allow my desktop to use Ethernet when it was connected directly but now it's fine after I put the switch between them?

I'm not going to mess with it anymore, but I am curious as to wtf is going on

I had a similar issue going from wall to modem to meshbox, and I resolved it by changing a setting on the modem but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. It's all moot now cause my new box worked fine out of the box, guess it's moot for you too hehe
