RIP Prothescar

I woke up this morning to a message that Prothescar had died. Which now that the day is over, the weight of it is finally catching up to me.

I was hesitant to make a thread since I could not independently verify the information itself, but it made sense. Proth had suddenly gone quiet across the board, stopped responding to messages, and so on. So I reached out to Rooks who speaks very regularly with him, and heard same. Semi-daily communication had ceased, no responses, no XIV achievements to Proth's character, etc.

Prothescar had been battling severe health complications for years, from cancer to incubation tubes, hospital stays, and surgeries. We didn't really talk about it much besides when he mention how horrible the pain was, and so on. He had said that he doesn't wish to involve people because he didn't want to be a burden, and I didn't want to push him. If he spoke to it I listened, and otherwise didn't want to remind him of the cruel hand he had been dealt.

From what I was told though, Proth had said "BRB in an hour or I'm dead", but actually fucking died and had gone into cardiac arrest.

Prothescar is probably best known in the community for his work studying mechanics, writing guides, and engaging in sharp conversations. His work on Blue Mage and all the fringe information around it was second to none. When BLU is coded for an XI emulator, it is the countless weeks, days, hours, and moments Proth had spent documenting and studying the job that gets used 1:1. In all of these ways and more, Proth lives on in the communities he spent so many years in and became part of the fabric of.

Proth's guides were actually the inspiration for me to make all the guides that I had. Which more importantly helped also document and expand on the existing knowledgebase.

If you didn't know Proth then it sucks to be you, but to quote Rooks: "The internet man's internet man, to the end." I recall telling Proth that I probably would have given up, and asked what pushes him to go on. To which he essentially responded "big titty goth GF" that he couldn't stand to leave behind.

The man was a legend, and it won't be the same without him. I will miss him very much, and I am sure that I won't be the only one.

Going back over some things from Proth, all the happy memories and so on, but this message makes a lot more sense now:



We both didn't think highly of the dilapidated state that is the XI community. It always felt better though to know that some guy who put in far more work and was far more intelligent and well-spoken than I could ever hope to be, was on the same side of the fence.

Proth would speak privately with me about things or with the discord Soviet, from the recent BG feeding frenzy over the guides, the shit with LSB, and so on and it always felt better coming from him. He often times just cut through it without sparing any of the ire.

Even beyond that, he was absolutely invaluable as a resource when working on things related to the game. Whenever he chimed in to something, be it if an open PR at LSB was true to the game mechanics, how things should be calculated, or trying to document information or understand something, it was like being handed fire from your own personal Mount Olympus. More still, his sense of humor was perhaps my favorite thing about him. He would send Rooks or I, and certainly others random memes and jokes, and it was great.

I do wish that I had taken more time to speak with him towards the end instead of being wrapped up in my own little world, but such is life. Proth just sort of slid back into my DMs one day after I had reached out while working on some guides, and over the years he never left. Unlike so many others also in their own world, he would keep in touch, and that meant a lot.

I was wondering when/where this thread was gonna pop up, but receiving a DM from his mom saying that he passed on 7/27 was NOT what I expected to see 3 days ago. From the times we've played on 14 and (a lot of) mobile games will be some of the hilarious moments we've had. Thx for the memories Prothescar "Barack Probama". You'll be missed.

Damn dude.. you were a real one. The time we spent on Valefor and all I learned from you I will never forget. The long nights that ran on into the morning of just bullshitting were some of the best times I had in a period where I was incredibly low. I'll never forget your kindness and how you approached problems. I'm so sad to have to learn about his passing and hope his family can move forward in these times.

Yes when I started lurking and chatting in the gacha channel at the beginning of lock down back in 2020 we'd talk gacha games and PC parts for a while.

I was aware of the condition but assumed he had gotten better after he was discharged from hospital after an operation. I never talked or asked about it though unless he decided to mention or talk about it!

All this is saddening to hear.
