Windows 10 BSOD 10-30 mins after startup, once, fine after restart - ideas?

Hi all, my 7 year old gaming/editing tower PC has developed an odd glitch. When I start it up in the morning, after 10-30 minutes, it hits a BSOD out of nowhere and restarts. Usually not even when I'm trying to do anything, it'll do it just sitting there. Then, after restart, it's solid for the rest of my workday. I shut down at the end of the day, and next morning the pattern repeats - 1 BSOD shortly after startup, then fine after the autorestart.

Any ideas? Should I risk updating to Windows 11 and see if that fixes it?

I suggest you use stress test tools to help identify the problem:

I had similar problems with my old 2015 rig, which started doing this in 2022 and got worse and worse over time. I ended up swapping all the hardware one by one, and it was only when I swapped everything into a new motherboard that it finally stopped.

    So yeah... good luck!

I saw this thread and thought "hang on I made this thread?"

I have this exact same problem with my now 8 year old PC - it's a prebuilt that I snagged for a good deal at the time, an Alienware (i7-6550k, 32gb ram, nvidia 1080)

I don't use it anymore, but now and then when I boot it up (because it was a CD drive!) I will basically let it blue screen first and then carry on using it normally.

Unlike Ragns my problem never got worst, but it became a feature/regular thing.

The only difference is that my blue screen will happen under 10 minutes from a fresh start.

Logs revealed nothing. After the BSOD I would use the PC quite hard.

What's suspicious is that all 3 of are machines are basically 2 years apart from the same era.

One thing I've been meaning to try was to reformat the system and see if the problem happens, but lazy kicked in. In 2021 I got a new rig so I never resolved my issue but lived with it, and I don't have the cash to bother trying to replace parts which is a valid troubleshooting method but I didn't have the means to do it as I don't otherwise dabble in PC parts much (and I'm too lazy to resell/give away), I buy what I need and get on with it.

PS. Happy to hear that somebody else shuts down their PC at the end of the day for a change ... ! xD

edit: and I gave up talking about this issue with anyone, or googling it, because you just get the generic responses like "did you try scanning for viruses" or "did you update all the drivers" and the usual "did you reformat"; it's really hard to describe this specifc issue to someone until you've met a soul that's experienced it

    I should've specified that mine was a i7-6700k, 32gb, nvidia 980

sorry, i just checked my receipt but seeing the 6700k jolted my memory and made me think "actually that looks like mine too let me go find the receipt"

my CPU is also i7-6700k ... ! For some reason I had 6550k in mind

But, you fixed it changing motherboards, so it's not the CPU for you.

    Some additional notes:

    - The BSOD only happens on a fresh start up overnight
    - I can generally reliably force a BSOD (on fresh start during new day) if I ran any utility that goes through my hardware
    - Because the PC ran fine/stable after the initial BSOD I just over time lived with it
    - If I was to shutdown at the end of my day and then boot it up instantly again, the problem does not happen, so this means the problem only appears for me when the PC has been off for an underdetermined amount of time
    - My PC was not overclocked (everything was stock)

Are you even able to update to Windows 11? I doubt a 7 year old PC meets the hardware requirements unless you hack it up a bit.

oh, hadn't even considered that, not sure. I know it was asking me for a while if I wanted to upgrade for free but I declined since I knew my edit software was working well on 10, but yeah I dunno.

Your cpu is technically supposed to have some type of safety key on it to install w11, but there are ways around it iirc. Not that you'd want to if your PC is too old tbh.

They require that your Intel CPU be at least 8th gen because that's where the firmware allows them to avoid the spectre/meltdown vulnerabilities. You can indeed hack it so it installs anyway, but I personally haven't bothered.

I'm going through something similar right now, but unforced. Baby requires that I be upstairs basically all of the time when not working, and my desktop is downstairs. Thus, I bought an old laptop (Lenovo p50) off ebay for $200 and am going to install Ubuntu on it to use it upstairs. Some day I may give Windows 11 a try, but, and I can't believe I'm saying this about Windows compared to Linux, I can't handle the amount of customization I'd have to do to get it working. Rip out Cortana, figure out how to turn off their ads, stop data sharing, rip out OneDrive. I'd be looking at a month of dicking around to get a box that runs without constantly asking me if I want to back up to the cloud and btw how about using Edge and btw did you know Bing is great unless you want good results without AI garbage? I think Mac OSX has started looking good purely by comparison with trash. Microsoft has lost the fucking plot when it comes to Windows UX.

Installing Ubuntu and configuring it was as easy as expected.

this is my build from 2017 btw

a googling tells me Win11 doesn't support the Ryzen 7 1800x, weird that it was offering me an upgrade

If your problem could be solved by a windows reinstall, why not reinstall 10?

First Gen Ryzen, same as I had. You should check out the 5th Gen Ryzen, they're compatible with a lot of the first Gen boards if you do a BIOS update. I went from a 1700x to 5700x and it was well worth the cheap upgrade. With PCs our age there are few meaningful upgrades but this one definitely helped. Also let me get w11 without a hassle.

Good tip, seems like a significant upgrade for not much cost.

I still cannot risk downtime while I have this gig so maybe I'll wait til November. Tried "sleeping" my PC after work yesterday but it woke up in the middle of the night, which sucks because it's in my bedroom...

Windows 11 LTSC IOT has no TPM requirements and could run on a toaster. Give that a shot if it comes down to it. It's newish but I've had no issues with it since jumping from 10 due to hard crashing issues. LTSC releases are about the same without all of the bullshit they aim to feed the average consumer if you're not familiar. TPM is almost if not entirely the reason they don't verify 11 compatibility or say that it won't work.

They are trying to patch out workarounds for other versions and failing but it could still end up being annoying.

Barring that a look into the windows event log might help, typically the system category holds system crash errors and can sometimes give you an idea of what died. Check your minidump directories (x:\windows\minidump) to see if crash logs are being properly written. WinDBG will be able to read said minidumps and might give you insight into what's going on. If it points to hardware, always reinstall first. Software failures can point to hardware and that happened to me just a couple weeks ago.

HWMonitor to keep up with temps and the recommended stress testers failing that. Windows 10 has a pre-installed RAM test now too but I don't know how shit it is, accessible from safe mode or recovery iirc.

After all that you can start pulling out parts more or less.

Ok so if I dropped a Ryzen 7 9700X into this build, would it work fine? Is my motherboard compatible? Is anything else dragging me down? Adobe Premiere is primarily GPU based, so my old graphics card shouldn't matter much.

    Thoughts?

Compatibility list for that motherboard: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/X370...US/support#cpu

The furthest AM4 goes is the 5000 series, which according to that it does support. Do some research though, on my old motherboard you had to do multiple BIOS updates in a specific order to get support for newer chips ... and that process actually dropped support for the 1000 series after the update. Just need to check and be careful.

If you're fine re-using everything else in your computer, check your local microcenter for an AM5 Motherboard/CPU combo. Ryzen 5000 chips are getting more expensive as production is pretty much slowing down on them. Might be possible to get the ram/motherboard/cpu combo for a bit more than what a 5000 cpu will run you on your own, and won't have to fiddle as much with bios updates just to get everything to work.

    $650 combo CPU + Mobo + Ram @ the Tustin Microcenter - https://www.microcenter.com/product/...r-build-bundle

Otherwise a bunch of other bundles - https://www.microcenter.com/site/con...-and-save.aspx
