Who is COTY, DPOTY, MIPOTY?
Who is COTY, DPOTY, MIPOTY?
COTY is either Atkinson or Bickerstaff
DPOY Evan Mobley unless Draymond's late season media blitz pays off
MIP prolly Dyson Daniels
i'd have been as happy as anyone to see jokic get another mvp. but it's disingenuous to suggest that SGA taking it was because of something pre-determined. it ignores that he's the best player on the best team in the league (by far), that he's had an unbelievably efficient season on offense, etc. etc.
this is certainly despite me thinking nba award voters can be pretty dumb, biased, and narrative-based. but shai's factors are legit and stack up against any pre-determinism.
if okc won less than 60 games, or if denver won close to 60 games or more along with okc winning less, then i think it changes a lot.

Got a tech last night for shrugging at a ref
i do think coty goes to one of kenny atkinson or jb bickerstaff. personally i'd give it to the former, because detroit honestly just kinda needed someone who actually cared and wasn't gonna let killian hayes step on the court for a single second of nba basketball. so i kinda feel like they coulda gotten literally anyone half-way competent and they still woulda shown up with a huge turnaround. that said, detroit's not just turned around, they're actually good so i get the case for him and wouldn't be surprised to see go that way.
cleveland's case for me i think is just that the team went from a pretty good one to a really elite one and i think that jump is harder to do with an established team.
dpoy is so wild for me to think about, because there's so many insane ones now who are simply in their nascent stages who are gonna be absolute terrors once fully formed.
woulda voted for wemby if he were still playing.
Wemby woulda had it easy if he reached the games required.
AWARDS
Jokic is clearly the greatest player in the world, this season could be thrown up against any other single season in NBA history honestly, but voter fatigue and Nuggs being only p good have slain him more than any kind of narrative. Shai is an excellent player on a historically good regular season team and much like Bron not getting 7 MVPs in a row people are simply tired of Jokic.
ROTY is indeed Castle but who cares terrible class. good draftin tho San Antone.
6th Man of the Year gotta be Malik Beasley he's been an absolute microwave for Detroit and is better than Pritchard at everything (the only thing either guy does) and i will stomp and shout if the latter gets it just because of the Boston bias.
COTY i nudge to Atkinson as it's so rare to see a team with middling talent leap to an elite regular season year, kinda like those Korver-Milsap Hawks.
Dyson is most improved by a lot (anyone saying Cade didn't watch Cade play last year and probably haven't this year).
he's also maybe the single best man defender in the NBA right now but Draymond or Mobley will take it. Anunoby, Amen Thompson (the man just face-guarded Curry into a 1-10 3 point game smdh), and Dort deserve consideration but the narrative has taken over at this point. no clear separation for anyone with the rightful king in Wemby down.
i'd prolly vote Amen, Houston has no reason to be as good as they are defensively with that lineup (VanVleet and Sengun are straight liabilities) and people not paying attention to the Rox is the main reason he's behind guys like Draymond and Dort.
also i saw the betting markets had Draymond at a <1% chance a month ago before he started promoting himself on his podcast which is hilarious. respect to him for talking his shit but shame on the media for falling for it.
my guess is next year that wemby clearly inserts himself into mvp consideration, and also very clearly becomes the most impactful defensive force in the game - as he averages something like 4 blocks/2 steals, while being able to deter entire swaths of the court while literally just standing there. but the rise (and following narrative) of amen as maybe the most exciting defensive player we've ever seen will put him over the edge. and then the media will give wemby mvp as a consolation.
I don't think Wemby's offensive game nor the Spurs record will be strong enough for him to be a top-5 MVP guy next year.

i see them making a big jump, with wemby/pop back + fox + the rest of their promising youth. there's also a lot of extra wins out there to vacuum up, since kyrie won't be back to start the season, and i expect the suns to stay bad/move on from KD.
and i think their jump + any improvements from wemby himself is gonna be enough. i mean he's already averaging like 24-25 points now? hard not to see him at least bumping that up a good bit, and anything that's close to 30/10 a game and whatever insane defense he puts forth will be enough to talked about.
i mean, i think he's only gonna need a little bit of attention on that for it to snowball, and i expect to see social media completely flooded with clips/analysis of him being the most obvious big-man defensive deterrent ever. enough for casuals to finally start saying: "ohhhhhhhhhh that's why big men should always win DPOY. dude just looks at people and they start making horrible decisions, like he's a monster in a horror movie."
and so i think with that, i can see him being top-5. like, you'll have jokic, luka, shai, giannis, and... who else truly stands out? maybe tatum or randolph if they have some MJ-type scoring season?
I'm not super sold on Fox but I respect the hell out of him recognizing that hitching himself to Wemby is good for his career, lol.
Lol meaningless 82nd game between Bucks and Pistons goes to OT because the Bucks don't listen to Doc Rivers for a foul
