But I can't get too excited about a guy shooting 61% from the field taking more shots he makes 45% of the time.

Problem is middys are inefficient af even if you are "good", which is why they've fallen out of favor.

think there's a big disconnect between people who play basketball and sabermetrics-only fans. when you play it's not just a matter of, should i shoot the ball close or shoot the ball from 3. sometimes you have to deal with a guy guarding you, and when you can only play a certain way defenses can orient entirely towards that and suddenly your offensive game crashes out (which we've seen happen to Giannis multiple times vs Toronto and Miami and Boston). happened last year's Finals as well with Boston playing Dallas for the drive-and-kick 3, forcing them into a putrid 31% performance with their offense outside of Luka's inside-the-arc game collapsing.

was there too much middy before the stats boys got their hands in the pie, absolutely, and 21 footers should be consigned to death. but even the ultimate all-in or all-out player in Harden was forced to build a mid-range floater attack after he got shutdown in playoff after playoff by teams who knew he was always going to the sabermetrics sweetspots.

fwiw archi also LIED to make the math work, Giannis shoots 46% from the midrange and 18% from 3 (27% last year). reckon the fact he's averaging career highs in both points and FG % speaks for itself (this despite his free throw % a career worst), but more importantly i think he is gonna be much harder to gameplan for come the playoffs. it's not as simple as building that wall when he can spin away from help and drain the midrange at an elite rate, supplementing the elite downhill attack and playmaking off the bounce.

Nobody cares about his 3pt percentage this year, he's shooting less than 1 per game and some of those are heaves, I was talking about when he was trying to add it to his game and shooting with volume (30% from '19-'22)
