It's all based around the charging network and ability to purchase outside of a dealership (both these are huge bonuses i'll give them). Elon was also seen as this amazing messiah until he went full tilt right wing after 2021 and getting butthurt that Biden didn't invite him to the whitehouse for the EV summit, now a ton of people are regretting that purchase. Still pretty cheap though compared to other offers, but that's why he's so afraid of the Chinese EV builds coming in since they would mop the floor with his product.

Ford and a couple others have gotten adapters now to charge with their shit, Hyundai is looking at Q1 or Q2 2025 to have an adapter and I think around 10-12% of the EV market already in the US and they've been selling for 2yrs really. Tesla's are pieces of a shit, sure every 1 in 10 or so is an "ok" EV but they're still trash. Also the only thing they have to sell are EVs while all the other auto manufacturers have much more of a selection.

Well, Elon did not start Tesla. He invested in Tesla and took it over. We may literally have Tesla even without him.

That said, US car manufacturers are some of the most incompetent, backwards companies we have. It is quite possible that without Tesla they would not have pushed so hard into electric sedans. The fleet emission targets necessitated some push in that direction but hybrid vs. electric was a live debate (leaning hybrid) until Tesla proved electric was viable at scale. I'm not actually sure that was a good answer for the debate to come to, but here we are.

Tesla was like 6 months old when Musk invested in it and they didn't produce the first Roadster for another 4 years.

The company likely never gets off the ground if he doesn't invest in it. Like 90% of the initial funding they got was from him

That doesn't make it his idea or mean they had zero other funding sources they could have used. By the same logic, Tesla was created by the federal government because they invested in it heavily via a grant during the Obama administration that kept it solvent.

There's a reason he's been forced out of the large projects he wasn't the sole owner of. He doesn't hold the world record for "most wealth lost by one person" by accident. He's a snake oil salesman using his dad's blood money to make big gambles. Sometimes he wins, mostly he loses, but it's always by accident. He's not a super genius, he's not some self-made hero of the people.

He's the CEO of both and while I don't care enough to look it up for SpaceX, the entire Tesla board is made up of his close friends which gives him the ability to overrule the other shareholders as we saw with the gongshow around his ridiculous compensation package.

The only thing that really keeps me from getting any EV is the lag in battery tech. Lithium Ion is not great. You know as soon as you buy the EV that your battery will stop charging in 10 years or less and cost more than the entire car to replace. It's a nonstarter.

10 Years is a fair amount of time to own a car, but that's best case scenario. At which point has zero resale value.

Next time I have to buy a car, I'll probably opt for a hybrid. Charging infrastructure doesn't feel reliable enough yet for me to get a full EV

Don't buy an EV, lease and EV. A lot of the good EVs are not made in the US and don't get the tax credit anyways but the dealerships will give you the "credit" as a knocked off pricepoint on the lease. Rivians are pretty nice though, in 10yrs the tech is going to have changed so much though. Right now my only major qualm with the EV is road trips where the charging stations might not be up to par since Electrify America sucks ass and only real other contender is EvGo which is always meh. Sucks running down on that battery and just fucking hoping you'll find a station (but this is a southwest issue and probably midwest, if you're just going up down the coasts or a little inland you're gonna have a lot of options all over).

Tesla almost folded without the help from the government bailing them out. They had the only charging infrastructure for a while with any presence literally anywhere and especially in more suburban or rural areas. Of course they're going to sell more because the other manufactures had to figure out the charging infrastructure themselves. Tesla was supposed to open up their charging to ALL evs but Musk went dick mode and kept stalling that over and over again to force more sales for tesla. VW started to build up Electrify America (I believe as part of a settlement) but it's still lagging behind in a lot of areas but making headway here and there. In CA I see a lot of Teslas but I see a shit ton of Rivans and Hyundais now and since the new Chevy EV came out i've seen a bunch hitting the roads too.

Tesla is fucking trash and their QA is horrible, but a major point is buying them without a dealership which is a huge bonus for a lot of people. Fuck it's why I even considered one back in 2021 despite hating Musk, because my hatred for dealerships especially during/post pandemic was sky high as well.
