Meet them halfway? She gave in all the way. "Half way" to Republicans is sonewhere to the fucking right of Liz Chaney. She could wear a suit into Congress and name herself "Bubba" and Republicans still wouldn't let a transgender bill sniff it's way out of committee.
If you don't know how politics works just say so dude.
This is some of the most milquetoast generic politics associated with a barrier breaker that I have ever fucking seen and you are lighting yourself on fire about it. The people that are the "first" of anything tend to be first because they don't draw attention to their differences. Their role has typically been to prove that X category can perform the job normally.
Jackie Robinson, our first black baseball player
Sandra Day O'Connor, our first female SC justice
Lindsey Graham, our first openly gay senator
Bill Clinton, our first black president
Obama, our first half-black president
etc.
They all minimize their differences and just get the job done as if they were white, a man, whatever the standard is.
Let the US get convinced that trans people can be normal before guilting elected trans people into being avatars for all children.
That's gonna be an uphill climb when half her party thinks trans rights and the barriers they break are milquetoast.
Throw "let the us get convinced that trans people can be normal" into the same sad fucking pile of BG posts.
I hate it, but this is the current political climateyes, it's sad when bad things happenjust not a hill worth dying onhow is she suppose to fight this?
Lindsey Graham is not openly gay lol
There's so much talk about timing and the political environment. Do Democrats have a date marked on the calendar that says "trans people matter now"? Or is there a "right side of history" month? Just let me know when it's trans-people-matter o'clock for Democrats so I can set an alarm.
Sacrifice your rights because of trolls is certainly a take you can have.
Kind of interesting that we are telling a trans person how they should act and feel about themselves.
I do it 5 days a week.
7 if you include my kid. It's also the same argument that Archi made about 5 pages back, which you are free to revisit. Part of that messaging has never really been "hey, it's ok if your rights get trampled on so long as you don't give in to trolls".
I just want to catalog the winning strategy here.
1. Run from policies you believe are not politically expedient
2. Hang a group out to dry because it isn't a hill worth dying on
3. Be normal in a bad political environment
4. Wait for the US to catch up and see one of these mysterious transgender people work a job normally
4. Relinquish your rights in order to not feed trolls.
That's the democratic strategy we know and love.
If only openly Black politicians would just stop drinking from white water fountains and started using black-only restrooms they could really help constituents afford their bills.
IMO this is just another form of the token Dem incrementalism and kicking the can of a problem further down the road hoping someone else may take care of it later. She might not have asked for the battle, but the battle came to her all the same. Problem is, constantly asserting now is not the time, this isn't the hill to die on, or whatever, has all stacked up into a bunch of ignored issues that people do care about and have felt abandoned on regardless of how batshit the GOP has been on the same issues. Given the deadlock we've basically been in since Obama, waiting for this perfect storm of political circumstance is just inviting defeat after defeat after defeat. Fight. Lose publicly and let the public see that proverbial bloody nose. Then get up and fight again. You can't make shots you don't take, but having a record of, "You see this thing you want? That guy voted against it!" is something better than nothing even if dealing with a politically obtuse public, because we all know the GOP loves to steal credit on things the Dems otherwise do.
Arguably, this was why the whole "weird" discourse was so effective because it was finally calling out their idiocy on everything. The Dems weren't running on all the fearmongering shit the GOP was. All one had to do was watch ads to confirm as such. Yet once the pushback died, that false messaging persisted and those late to the party only really had that to work with. Much as our country over-glorifies sports, a fraction of a percent of trans kids aren't ruining it. But that was given to them. And now bathroom stuff. Now normalizing of woke mind virus bullshit with Elon leading the charge while terrifyingly gaining much more political power than he has any right to. This is exactly what happens when you treat a problem as not one, and it's not the only problem that's gotten this treatment by the Dems. People are tired of politics basically being a rigged Tyson v. Paul fight.
So psychologically, people don't come around when you feed their anxiety and discomfort by ignoring it and keeping them from having to face it.
That's about as much more as I'm going to say at this point.
I'm just imagining Hiram Revals going into Congress, where he was immediately met with discrimination, being like "meh, we blacks are bad politics and I really just wanna be another generic guy" instead of literally making his first speech about reinstating black politicians at the state level.
