Baumgartner died on 17 July 2025, at the age of 56, during a paragliding flight in Porto Sant'Elpidio (Fermo), Italy. He lost control of the craft after a cardiac arrest in the air and crashed into a swimming pool of the Le Mimose Family Camping Village, striking a young woman who was injured on impact.

Because drug overdose leading to drowning is at least painless because the person is heavily sedated or too high to consciously experience it. He was pulled out by a rip current, so chances are he was fully aware and so was his family that had to watch helplessly.

Heavy metal star Ozzy Osbourne has died, just weeks after reuniting with his Black Sabbath bandmates and performing a huge farewell concert for fans.

In a statement, his family said he died "surrounded by love".
