How will the next administration move to ensure network security? It would make a great darknet diaries episode.

Ideally, you'd want to do the impossible. Rebuild it all from a the ground up, but migration would be impossible. Like, there's fucking kids accessing this shit without seemingly much oversight, kids I'm sure able to plant shit that would be very difficult to find.

COBOL and Fortran. IRS backend is sitll running COBOL shit and so was library of congress at least when I was going to school in 2014-2015 era and my teacher worked there, no way that's been updated so safe bet. We have a shit ton of missions at NASA running shit on fortran still.

It seems to me these guys working for Musk currently are skiddies and don't know shit beyond writing some basic code or playing with AI and sucking off Musk to get the jobs. Musk himself doesn't understand any of this shit either but loves to pretend he does. That said, someone who actually KNOWS something, or Russia just telling Musk to hire a few devs they know can do horrible shit is a very real threat because it's not like these fuckers need a clearance or anything to be touching these systems which is wild.

I would say it would need to be rebuilt but I don't think that's likely either, these agencies are getting gutted hardcore...and if they seek outside help from contractors we're just going to get shit work like Obamacare website and other avenues like that for years...even if they wanted to fix it which isn't likely either. IRS just goes with "well it works", they have floated out bids on rebuilding the system to certain contractor groups but all the bids were way too high (friend's mom used to work overseeing bids for IRS projects and other stuff and was telling me about it recently) so it's just stayed how it is. There were some things started under Obama that were net good for govtech, like 18F.

Also, healthcare.gov v2 was functional and the saga is generally emblematic of our govtech problems. v1 didn't scale, which is common in tech products, but we accept a zero percent failure rate for government services so instead of the v2 W everyone remembers the v1 L. That is in some ways the tragedy of Musk's approach to breaking every government agency. If you said "yo, we are going to maybe break everything but then it will work and be better" because you hired the right people to modernize it, that would be one thing, but he is saying "yo we aren't competent enough to realize we are going to maybe break everything and have no plans to fix it."
