The idea that the civil rights movement of the 60s was in any way non-violent is a gross oversimplification of what lead to the civil rights act. The face of the movement was non-violent. The movement was decidedly less so.

The swing voters who determine elections are middle class people who just want things to be normal and generally don't feel the pressure of their rights being taken away, but do fear social unrest.

The aforementioned Nixon law & order demographic, which also delivered the White House to Bush 41.

Going to quote a random comment I found on reddit about why I believe it doesn't matter what flag was waved.

"If we fly the American flag, we get told we're paid instigators. If we don't fly a flag, there's "No message." If we fly some other flag, it's a "bad look." If we protest on a Tuesday, we don't have jobs. If we protest on the weekends, we're ignoring our families. If we protest calmly on a sidewalk somewhere, it's ineffective and performative. If we disrupt daily life, we're terrorists. That's why optics don't matter, because the people who want to tear down the protests will do it from any angle they can or just make shit up when that fails like they always have."

Of course the game is rigged. The point is to triangulate for maximum effect.

It's the same reason why I've said that Palestinians' best hope is accepting complete second-class subjugation because any sort of resistance, no matter how justified, eats up all the well-deserved sympathy and helps the status quo justify current "security" measures.

Tyrath wants to say the movement wasn't violent even if MLK as a figurehead was? Then he's forgetting that the Civil Rights Movement was the culmination of decades of working in the trenches. Remember MLK was very much a radical just for wanting change at all --- that gets forgotten because people just think of him as moderate due to Malcom X.

And the Civil Rights Movement wouldn't have been able to make uninvolved middle-class people change from "Can't they just quiet down?" to "They are right to protest" if them throwing bricks became the image of the movement over things like this:

It's like y'all forgot 2020 happened. Breonna Taylor gets murdered by police. Violent protests. George Floyd gets murdered by police. Violent protests. Ahmoud Arbery gets murdered by a former cop. Violent protests.

Trump must have fucking crushed it during that election.

Well I mean that's denying a very significant event in 2020 that skewed everything else massively. Everything you said is true, but is blunted by the overall impact from COVID.

I mean Trump will almost certainly lose any elections going forward (including midterms) based on his current behavior, assuming there's no shenanigans. The problem is 2025 isn't an election year and voters have a short memory or we wouldn't fucking be here in the first place.
