This all started from Nick Shirley, a wannabe MAGA provocateur who had a camera crew follow him around as he randomly visited day care centers across the state, demanding to see and count the children as the cameras rolled. If day care centers refused, as they should have, he declared them fraudulent. And now, people like Elon Musk are accepting his research as fact and vilifying the Minnesota Somali Community for it.

A bad faith actor did a stunt. Social media lapped it up. And now people are using it to justify blatant racism.

Somalis are an easy target for large-scale bullying because, to put it simply, they look different. Ethnic Somalis were generally not enslaved in the American Transatlantic Slave Trade. Add to that the fact that the vast majority of Somalis are Muslim, and you have a demographic that presents distinctively.

What’s more, we know Somalia as a troubled country. We’ve seen Black Hawk Down. If you’re racist, but you’ve suppressed that racism as a function of shame, Somalis give you an out. They’re DIFFERENT black people. They’re scary. They’re easy to cast as the OTHER.

People in power like Elon Musk, or, the actual President, demonize Somalis because it’s convenient. It justifies hatred of the wrong kind of immigrant, the wrong COLOR of immigrant.

And now people whose lives haven’t turned out the way they expected, people who feel cheated, are lashing out. Because sometimes it’s easier to hate someone you’ll never meet than face reality. And who better to hate than Muslim black people who look different.
