Mixed bag I would say. Most of the true believers don't even watch the NFL and haven't since the Kaepernick stuff.

The NFL is a lot more sensitive to this stuff than say, the SEC. They know they have an overall more moderate fanbase, even if it is still definitely the most right leaning of any of the professional sports leagues.

SEC teams meanwhile have fans in blackface, run confederate flags across midfield, and have their team's head coaches run for office as far right MAGA bootlicking demagogues. And win, usually.

i also believe most of maga are very into the NFL. i'm skeptical that 'most' of them don't watch it. i don't personally know a single Trumper who is anti-NFL, especially these days. their mood the whole week is usually dictated by how it's going for the Cowboys or Chiefs

Every single one I know is virulently against it. All of their cute little bromantic biker bars they hang out at all of the time all stopped showing games on Sundays too. If you go in there and try to watch a game you'll either get laughed at or told to leave.

if we’re going to use anecdotal evidence, i usually go out to do my drinking in central jersey (red areas in a blue state) during nfl/college football games, and i can assure you the trumpers are out and about on football weekends complaining about how much the jets and giants suck

if they “stopped watching football” they mean they stopped watching it at home

You literally cannot get in anywhere to watch a Chiefs game in the area unless you make an entire day of it to come in 2 hours before kickoff. And this is in the rural outskirts of Kansas City.

The big wave of banning confederate flags from sporting events and government buildings came in 2020.

If anything the SEC was slightly ahead of the curve. They probably more than anything is what forced Mississippi to finally change its state flag by threatening them from no championship games unless they changed it.
