    DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined (PC/PS5/XSX/NSW2) - February 5, 2026

During today’s Nintendo Direct showcase, SQUARE ENIX unveiled DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined, a remake of 2000’s DRAGON QUEST VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, set to launch on Feb. 5, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2™, Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam® and Microsoft Store on Windows. Both returning fans and new players will experience a standalone, epic single-player RPG adventure to save the world, now lovingly reimagined with a hand-crafted aesthetic that makes the game feel like a living storybook.

DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined builds on the beloved original game, which finds its colorful cast of characters unlocking a one-of-a-kind storyline across multiple islands, discovering the adventure piece by piece. The modern RPG features fresh visuals, refined gameplay and tightened pacing for a truly unforgettable experience.

    Key features include:
    • Hand-Crafted Aesthetic - The character designs, originally crafted by world-renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, have been reimagined into a charming 3D art style using dolls actually created in the real world. Environments and dungeons are also brought to life with a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic that vividly illustrates the beloved world of the DRAGON QUEST series.
    • Enhanced Story - While remaining faithful to the original story, the narrative of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been enhanced to provide a more streamlined story experience. Alongside the main adventure, players can enjoy optional side quests, stories and minigames.
    • Thrilling Battle System - The turn-based battle system has been overhauled with significant changes to offer more dynamic and thrilling battles, including an updated vocation system that features a “Moonlighting” mechanic, allowing players to use two vocations at one, a “Let Loose” ability that can be activated when a character gets worked up, and a new "Monster Master" vocation that introduces the “Positive Reinforcement” vocational perk that summons powerful monsters to assault any enemy.
    • Memorable Characters - Journey alongside characters like Keifer, the prince of Estard, and Maribel, the daughter of a mayor, as well as many other allies and enemies.
    • Sprawling Exploration - Unlock, expand and explore different worlds by collecting fragments and completing tablets. The varied worlds feature bustling towns to visit, challenging dungeons to conquer, quests to partake on and so much more.
    • Quality-of-Life Improvements - A host of quality-of-life improvements have been implemented in the game for a smooth experience, including a redesigned UI that will allow for easier access to information.

So how many more of these are they going to remaster/remake/port/etc before XII lands?

This was a tremendous, tough PS1 entry when it launched. I sold my copy for $100 last week! What a treat to get a remake that intends to maintain the integrity of the original while addressing so many of its QOL issues and expanding with sidequests and deeper lore. Easy day 1 for me.

Yeah it sucks not getting new DQ12 info, but the treatment this and DQ1-3 got were sorely needed. A new generation of players gets another taste of what's made this series so venerable to fans and precious to SE. I'd happily gobble up an HD-2D remake of DQ5 and remasters of DQ8 or 9 before a DQ12 release. It's the very last title the principals worked together on, let Horii cook to deliver one last masterpiece.

And holy crap, look what SE can do with a PS1 IPs now. If the FF9 remake exists I hope it's of this vein. This is gorgeous.

As far as DQ7R goes, I'm mostly curious if this is a prettied up version of the 3DS game I meant to grab all those years ago (S-E was really stingy on availability on their non-FF handheld releases in Canada), or if it is it's another take on revamping the PS1 original. I can't remember any specifics, but I recall some people didn't like some of the 3DS changes (streamlined the world progression or something at a point).

but the treatment this and DQ1-3 got were sorely needed.
Were those iOS/Android versions that had a PS4(only in Japan) and Switch port crap or something? It's not like they were inaccessible to play on current platforms prior to the HD2D versions coming out next month.

Still sucks for me that S-E's leaving PS4 out of the equation on their DQ releases despite everything else pretty much coming to it still. Might just start building a DQ library on Steam at this point since I was waiting on HD1-3 to be all out before picking up any of those.

SE dropped a lot of new info today on the game's official website.

They detailed the characters, new UI, graphics, combat, side content, DLC, etc.

So is the content going to be made optional or cut entirely?

Demo is available on all platforms except Steam, which will be up at reset tomorrow. Save data carries over and you get a skin for Maribel.

You can get a solid 4 hours out of the demo to experience everything it has to offer. I'm hooked to the gameplay and the graphics.

Dang, if you can get through the intro and the first island in less than 4 hours they really streamlined the beginning.

I'm okay with this though. The original game is sooo long. Really don't need to wait 35 hrs into the game to introduce the job system even though it was mind blowing back in the day

I used to kick/exile all but one monster from every fight for as long as I could around AllTrades to max out as many jobs as I could before going on with the game.

To be honest it's been so long I don't understand the mechanics of that

Finally trying the demo. Loving the presentation. If FF9 remake ever actually happens, I'd love for it to be in a similar style

Liking the addition of vocations at the start of the game. Moonlighting sounds fun too. The initial island got streamlined quite a bit and I am okay with it. I remember the main game taking so long to actually get going

Getting pretty middling review scores. Seeing a 75-90% range, making 83-84% on aggregate sites. Excited to try it in a few months, but not disrupting my Refantazio playthrough for it.
