I genuinely loved 12, always have. Played it top to bottom, even the chain farming for ultimate weapon ingredients. 12 is in my top 5 FF games, maybe my top 5 PS2 games. Vaan is fine, he's just supposed to be the POV character, not the MC. It's clearly Ashe's story.

XII probably settles further back in my ranking list. It had decent side content, sure, but the story did drag at times, had some loose ends, and the occasional "what the fuck were they thinking..." moments. And while I generally enjoyed the gambit system and wished more games would do similar as opposed to rough presets, combat itself still had some flaws like spell queuing or (de)buffs not really lasting long enough. Sadly, neither Fran's ass nor Balthier's swagger hypnotized me and the more I've aged, the more I've grown cold on underaged protags. Probably didn't help I was more of a Star Trek fan than Star Wars.

The FF12 40/40 is a straight up panicked SE trying to ensure a ROI for their 5 year slog fuckup development with a shamelessly profligate advertising campaign. Little did they know how deftly they'd repeat themselves and fuck up FF13 and FF15 even worse.

So many fumbles along the way. So, so many. A few wins, though.

FFXII is my favorite Final Fantasy, and one of the best games I've ever played.

Ivalice setting, well written story, characters, extremely good bestiary, excellent music, phenomenal battle system, great antagonist with political ambitions rather than destroy everything mentality, mind blowing variety of weapon/armor/accessory, hunts. It is a RPG that gets everything right, imo. I don't mind Vaan as other characters never hesitate stepping up to the spotlight whenever necessary.

Zodiac Age and the job system is the cherry on the top.

Was 10/10 in 2006, 10/10 today.

FF13 was a good change of pace, has excellent battle system, introduced stagger, has perfect music, very well written protagonist. It is also among my favorites. FF15...could've been better, great potential yet missed a lot of things.

Not just because of Vaan, but he did have a mental breakdown and quit, and it is rumoured that creative differences between his vision and Square Enix's direction for the project were a huge part of it. I am definitely reading between the lines a bit tho, to be fair. But Vaan was absolutely not his idea, that we know. Originally Ashe and Basch were the main characters

He wanted Basch as I recall, but S-E said no more old Ivalice men leads because Vagrant Story didn't do well, so he refocused the narrative around Ashe, and they said no chicks, if it ain't a twink it ain't Final Fantasy, so he dropped Yiazmat in the game and bounced.

Also I ain't played Rebirth yet but is there any agreement that the stagger system in FFVII Remake was frustrating as hell because it seemed scripted to transition into the next phase and reset the stagger bar the moment you filled it for like 80% of the bosses

I mean, I'm like 99% sure in regards to FFXII, you could have started the game with Basch getting framed, cut right to when Balthier and Fran show up at the Prison, completely delete Vaan and absolutely nothing would have changed lol

Vaan is OK, no complaints here. Storytelling from a supporting character’s perspective is nothing new in literature/movies. Not every protagonist have to be “the hero”.

He is the narrator who brings all heroes together. You don’t even have to keep him in battles.

Btw, Matsuno dismissed Vaan rumors as “fake news”.

Key removed and altered content includes:

Story Areas: The islands of Gröndal, El Ciclo, and Providence are gone.

Side Content: The Casino, Monster Meadows (Monster Park), The Haven (Immigrant Town), and the Excellence Grading Organisation (World Ranking Federation) have been cut.

Systems: Monster vocations were removed; Monster Hearts are now accessories, and the Monster Master vocation replaces Monster Masher.

Additions: A new, complex arena for endgame battles, new childhood scenarios for the protagonist and Maribel, and a refined, faster-paced story structure.

Optional Changes: While some areas were cut, others were converted to optional side stories accessible through a redesigned fragment system.
