Guess that explains the rumors of "FSR4 coming to PS5 Pro" I heard about a few weeks ago, even though it's under Sony's PSSR.
The console badly needed it with the state of modern games (blur-fests), and so does the base PS5, but I doubt Sony is going to introduce another hardware revision that adds it to that as well. I don't even know why any respectable dev would use FSR1 in the first place on a PS5. Shit looks awful.
Can someone explain to a noob why this a big deal? I still got the regular PS5 and I mostly game on a PC. So is there any reason for me to get a "better" PS5 before the next gen?
I think it depends.
Do you have a nice 4k TV with 120hz, VRR, etc?
If not. No.
Do you game at 4k on PC and have a farly high end system?
If yes. Again no.
I got a Pro last year before the price went up and when it was on sale. I have a LG OLED with the specs mentioned above. Absolutely no regrets. Games that fully utilize the hardware look stunning. I like things to look the best they can so I haven't used PSSR much. It does have a noticable improvement for FPS but sacrifices a lot of imagine quality in current gen games. That's why I am pretty psyched about this update. To be able to play everything in 4k, Ray tracing On, at 60fps with barely noticable loss in imagine quality is going to be awesome.
Also, might take into consideration the rumours that next gen will be delayed due to the ram problems
The bump from 1080p (which is what we're all mostly watching TV at) to 4k is huge and noticable in quality but never really talked about much imo because we grew up with 1080p being wonderfully adequate.
There is a huge difference in visual fidelity though, as well as performance to reach it. Also so few 4k gaming monitors (plenty of 1440 though) so maybe most people aren't thinking about it unless they're hooking their PC up to the TV like I do for certain games like Alan Wake 2 or Death Stranding

I just got myself an Odyssey Ark for xmas and it's the first time my PC started gaming in 4K. It's fucking awesome lol
I sorta want a pro, but I'm fine with my TV from 2019 soo, yeah.

Sony has canceled the PC ports of Saros and Ghosts of Yotei. They're shifting focus back to the console ecosystem as it's more profitable for them.
It's not surprising that a Japanese gaming company would make a stupid financial decision, but this one feels really stupid since by most accounts their first party games sell quite well on Steam.
Are they counting on the RAM shortage driving more players to consoles?
Bold strategy cotton, etc.
Console Exclusivity had always been a core strategy for Sony. Taking hardware and different playerbase in consideration they might’ve seen PC not as a direct competitor back then but with Steam Machine in development and Xbox Successor looking to have all popular digital stores under one umbrella(steam, battle.net) it is understandable why they chose stepping back.
With new Xbox president reconsidering going multiplatform Sony may end up finding itself on the other side of the exclusivity battle real quick. Imagine PS6 having no exclusives while Xbox successor having many and able to run GoW, etc.
boooooo
It took SE almost losing their asses on XVI and VII ReMake trilogy before they finally determined exclusivity was a bad thing
Initially that was my thought about SE exclusivity as well but later I’ve learned that Sony is covering a respectable portion of their development costs as part of the deal.
Would early xbox and pc releases break even? Probably not as they maintain their position.
It’d be a horrible deal for Capcom for example, they are sporting on their own engine, franchise is well established on multiple platforms and good sales are almost guaranteed. They even released remakes on ios lol(surprisingly solid on an iPad pro)
Edit: just learned that FF7 Part 3 won’t be timed exclusive, am really glad they are able to pull it off financially.
Console exclusivity is what keeps people in your ecosystem buying physical and digital media from you and not others. It's horrible for the consumer but honestly preferred for console makers. A part of Xbox failing is because they have no games, and those they do end up on PC anyways. Literally why have an Xbox then?
Same for PlayStation. I stopped buying games for it cause they'll end up on PC anyways. If I knew that ahead of time I wouldn't have even bought a PS5 to begin with. Now add in the occasional digital purchase that has even better margins for them, or the lack of me buying them, and it's easy to see why they have suddenly reversed course.
Same will happen to games on game pass eventually. It's not gonna be day 1 on game pass forever, they're gonna axe that and make you buy it, or wait for the "free" version 6 months down the road.

But is console exclusivity actually worth it?
Microsoft veered away from it because they likely saw it's not worth the lost profits from also having the games available on Windows.
Sony and Nintendo are still doing but I don't trust the financial sense of Japanese gaming companies since we see time and again how these companies love to shoot themselves in their own foot.
