This whole situation about his death and what has come out recently is very sad. Hours after his death, his wife started a GoFundMe because the family spent so much money on treatments that they were going broke. Allegedly before he died he was selling off Dawson’s Creek memorabilia to help pay for medical bills. The donation goal was $500K but ended up reaching $2.5 million. He and his family were renting a 5,000 square foot home that sat on 36 acres for an undisclosed monthly amount and right before his death, Van Der Beek and his wife purchased the home for his family for $4.5 million dollars.
This has a lot of people who donated to the GoFundMe quite upset for obvious reasons. People have noted that while Van Der Beek got little to no residuals from the show that made him famous, he was still acting and has another project that will be released posthumously. I think the biggest shock honestly is that he and his wife and were alleged anti-vaxers and were seeking alternative treatment for his cancer that probably wasn’t covered by his insurance which is why it cost so much for him out of pocket.
Correct, he had insurance. The issue was the stuff he was doing that the insurance company flat-out refused to cover, like “nah bro, we’re not paying $100k for healing crystals.”
When it comes to cancer, especially when you’re already on every legit treatment available, I don’t fault people for trying anything. But using that as a reason to ask people for money is a little sus.
From what I’ve read, they also own multiple homes, so selling stuff was most likely because he didn’t care about that stuff as much as the others, not because they were desperate.
If people still wanted to donate knowing all that, good for them. But the family isn’t hurting the way others would be in the same situation.
