Yes.

90% of people who get ALS are dead within 5-8 years. Your whole body just shuts down to the point where you would choke to death if you tried to eat or drink. Some are lucky, and are able to eat/drink with the help of a feeding tube, like Stephen Hawking was. But with your body shutting down you will be a quadriplegic for the rest of your life.

Most try to commit suicide, because the fear of starving to death is awful. In some countries like Canada, it is legal to kill yourself, if you are found to have ALS.

That is genuinely terrifying; thank you for the explanations. Wasn't aware this was also what Steven Hawking suffered from.
