Bartz definitely has to be the worst protagonist. Firion and Luneth get a pass because they hadn't invented personalities for MCs yet but then we got Cecil. Yet they decided to walk that back for Bartz and make him almost a blank slate again.

Similarly, FFXIII's Battle system is inferior to XII's and that makes it even more pronounced because we're a whole console generation later and somehow have fewer options and less control than the Gambit system gave us. Still going to give XIV's the worst overall though.

again im not sure how we are defining battle system as to how it relates to character progression (based on the first post). if I am splitting the two then 2 has the worst character progression, and I would join you in saying the 14 battle system is the worst

I feel like holding forward and attack being 90% of the core to the system would make XV more of a contender.

Worst Optional Boss Fight: Warmech (I). It’s mostly because it’s not really optional, the game can just decide to fuck you even if you don’t want to fight it.

Went with this for the exact same reasoning. And then when you try to spawn the fucker he decides to become a no-show.

I fucking hated it. It felt endless and every random battle felt like it’s own mini boss.

and he’s at the very end of a long two part dungeon. if you spawn him by accident, and even if you manage to kill him, he can help deplete your resources before the actual boss of the dungeon (that he is harder than).

And if you want to spawn him, you can deplete your resources before even spawning him.

I hesitated about including Pitioss Ruins because the concept, lore, and environment really are pretty cool.

But then I reminded myself about the shitty platforming in a game never designed for platforming. With the reward being a completely worthless accessory.

Meh. It's less about the game and more so about having to relearn and rewrite gearswap scripts.

For me it was gearswap never fully working the way I wanted (it still never equipped my Crep Cloak to let me cast Impact whenever I tried no matter how I adjusted) and my most consistent gripe about XI for over 2 decades; by the time I get up to the point of being able to do the content with the best rewards, everyone else already has groups they do it with and S-E time gates everything so you can never get help because no one can do things outside of their set groups.

Actually that dragon from Odyssey is probably the worst optional boss fight because at the highest difficulty it can just decide that you aren't going to win.
