The extension doesn't kick in till 2027-28 season. Celebrini's contract with 2027's cap numbers is only estimated to be 1.2% cap value (16.5%) higher than Crosby's 2012 12yr $104M contract (15.3%)

We also bought Celebrini's first year of UFA, which lets be honest, he'd probably get 25m a year offers.

That's the contract I want him to take the home town discount on of we are competing.

This one being a couple million below the max while we still have some core pieces on entry contracts is fine

Also Sal, if your team doesn't get younger soon, it's back to the island of irrelevancy for you guys.

Montreal right now is the team to fear long term in the east, locking up all those players before the contract explosions of this season.

Wish y'all the best, hope it works out for you, but I'd rather my team try to emulate successful teams instead of ones that are consistently missing the mark. It is a difference in priorities; some teams want to build a team that can compete, others are banking on their flavor of superstar to take them to the promised land ala McDavid; completely ignoring how he still lost in the end. Look at Carolina, that did it the same way as the Panthers(iirc no one even makes 10mil, let alone more than that), and all the post season success they both have had for how long now? Even when they don't win, they see more success and productivity than any of these teams overpaying to have a "superstar" on their roster.

There isn't a cheat code superstar good enough to justify a high price tag imo. No singular player is going to carry you hard enough ala Ohtani or Jordan. They're squandering the opportunity to build a team and window to the cup by overpaying ahead of time for stars with unproven playoff capacity.

He got 5 1st place votes as an also-ran in the closest voting for the Hart. Carried the Sharks with 115 points in the season on a team that's still finishing its rebuild and nearly arrived to the playoffs. They're definitely making the playoffs next season and may win the Pacific.
