I think the cheapest thing you could make are Darksteel Picks until 73. Depending on your servers DS prices (22kish on ours), it would be like a 10-11K loss per synth. They sell for about the same price to NPC as on the AH so you should just dump them all to an NPC(12.5k I think).

I am in the same boat as you... A stack of ingots cost 240k on my server so yea... It sucks but I am going to do my best to get through it.

well since my CC is at 54 I was thining of doing kote, Hara-Ate, & Zunari Kabuto to take me to 70. at least this will soften the blow. I will be paying 130k per synth session instead of 260k+

yea on phoenix a stack of DS ingots goes for about...300k...maybe a bit more, and sheets go for about 350k /sigh i hate skilling on brestplates

I remember when I used to make 1k per pick selling it to NPC. Good times eh Amarok.

It may be different now or not as efficient thanks to darksteel prices, but:

80-81 Darksteel Gorgets (NPC for 4k or something like that; never sell on AH)
81-83 Darksteel Nodawas (Same as above)
83-87 Celata/Colossal Axe (Neither are the fastest sellers; did some of each due to slow sales)
    87-88 Colossal Axe
88-90 Adaman Ingots (These were a slight loss a few months back, I think they are slight profit now and sell fast. The only bad thing is when you blow them up.)

I’m glad I got about half the darksteel stage out of the way back when darksteel ingots were 105k per stack. I think even the darksteel stuff in the 80s was with ingots at no more than 250k per stack.

I just got to 83 smithing couple days ago. I did karimata arrowheads until 79 and nodowas till 83. Those nodowas you can desynth and get darksteel ingot or silk thread back about 50% of the time, kind of prefered that than selling it to npc for 4k. I'm kind of undecided as to what to make after 83, Perhaps it's time to level goldsmithing for subcraft.

What about the Darksteel pick stage? I'm about to start those and my woodworking is at 30, is that enough?

    Yes.
