Relic Katana upgrade question

Somone in my LS recently went to upgrade their relic katana for the 3rd time. They traded in the last of their Jadeshells and they were given a Lancewod log. Does this log have a use or have they been screwed out of 13mil? I know very little about relic updrades but i dont think that SE would just give a compleatly useless item out during a quest that requires so much time and effort to do.
