I believe a thf must be in Alliance and actively engaged on the mob the whole fight for TH to take effect.
    I believe you are wrong
I believe a GM or Square representative stated this in a press conference.

It shouldn't be this big of a guessing game. I'll try to address all the theories I can that I can remember and that I've tested. If we all go off one assumption, which sounds reasonably believable to me just bearing in mind the simplicity in actually implementing things into the game, then you can quickly and easily stop all your TH myths. So, if we assume, -all- job traits that affect monsters' loots are activated the same way, which I do, then observe Gilfinder. It's far easier to visually see these results than look for the comfort of the people with the 'l33t zomg TH' who got last hit when the Ridill dropped.

    Gilfinder tests:
Take a Tonberry Tracker, drops 6k gil, base, every time. I could solo them as a blm all day, and get 6k, with no variation. Now, when I invite a thief friend, and people say "You get TH(Gilfinder) as long as they're in the pt," you realize this is bullshit. I had a thief friend in pt while I solo'd more, 3k gil each, every time. (Still 6k total for you math majors) Now another theory: "You get TH(Gilfinder) as long as thief is within Xp range." Nope, had him stand by me, right on top of me, he received exp and we each received 3k. So when are these traits active on the mob? The instant the thief does anything at all on the mob. Any use of any offensive JA(steal, mug, etc.), any attempted attack, hit, crit, or miss, any ranged attack, any resisted lv37 ninjitsu, anything. Fighting 1% of the fight, or 100% of the fight, helpful, or useless, mattered not; we got 9.2xxk gil each time. Furthermore, the thief could take any action and then drop pt, and the traits would remain present. He could log, he could zone, he could die; none mattered. Using Andvaranauts, I could implement the same gilfinder myself, just with one action. It even stayed present when I put Zenith mitts back on. Traits, once active initially by any action, seemed impossible to remove. You could have your thief toss his/her Thief Knife and Assassin's Armlets after he/she hit Tiamat once for 0 and it wouldn't matter for gaining the effect of TH..4.

So all those people who are afraid to have a thief drop pt, afraid to have a thief die, afraid to remove/add anyone throughout the course of a fight because it'll hurt your drops, afraid to not have a thief with TH3/4 in for the whooole fight, afraid to have a BLM get the finishing blow.. you're paranoid.

Granted, Gilfinder and Treasure Hunter could have entirely different triggers and this post looks retarded, but I highly doubt it and mainly see no reason to try explain amazingly horrible or amazingly good drops with anything more than a coin flip.
